Joke? 
May be not! I think it's a day dedicated to those who care about the planet! It's meant to remind you how badly things are going, to help you realise there is noting you can do about it (apart from recycling your trash and changing to economic light bulbs, which is not much) and make you feel miserable. Its purpose is definitely not to make people more aware of the effect of their doings on Nature.

that's why i wrote, it seemed like a joke to me. because nothing happens. it's not that anyone feels directly involved in preserving the nature. it's like an ordinary day. i noticed it only because i incidentally saw the shapeshifted google logo.
