Have a look at http://www.bbc.co.uk/cult/hitchhikers/ which has links to Hitch-Hikers Guide To The Galaxy (h2g2) pictures and a screensaver.

I think it sort of did (pre-BBC?) but they got pulled. I found some old defunct links hidden in comments behind the visible part of an article. Any of the h2g2 logos could easily be used as wallpaper but I don't think the BBC would approve. They are certainly very protective of their copyright in public (varous Smiley and text disputes with other sites). I'm less sure how they feel about people using things in private (eg on home PC only). I think an italic would have to comment on that - which is why I didn't mention it at first.

Hmm. I use a cropped version of the alabaster h2g2 logo as a favicon for the site in my browser. I wonder if the BBC would have any complaints about me using that!

I wondered if the BBC didn't even officially (ie not including Jim in this) know about favicon since they didn't have any set up for any of the pages I tried. It was an IE/Windows-only thing after all - though it might be in danger of being adopted elsewhere.

It's not an IE-only thing - it's just that Gecko and ilk adopt the W3C standard of using a tag in the page whereas IE looks for a file called /favicon.ico.
In Phoenix/Mozilla etc one can set their own favicons for sites that don't have them, making it easier to browse toolbar shortcuts, and favicons for sites appear next to their address in the address bar (and in their tabs if one uses them).

Nearly all my website pages have their own section icon explicitly set, eg (I don't normally do this new-fangled self-closure thing). However, because of the domain name forwarding being dodgy, they only work on the actual server address instead of on the short domain one.
This applies to all files. So one can only go into the site by the front door and do indirect linking from there rather than specify a page within it. Mind you, that does help to keep one section of the site secret. Only those people to whom I've passed the full address can see it as it isn't linked from the rest.
Key: Complain about this post
