Gary Larson? Errr... nope, name doesn't ring a bell. Anyway, everyone knows the best cartoonist is Matt Groening! (Futurama, The Simpsons)

He's an animator, not a cartoonist

Gary Larson, of such famous picture books as Weiner Dog Art.

The Far Side guy is how most people think of him.
But better than Charles Adams?

Actually Matt Groening started off as a cartoonist, not an animator. He had a strip called Life in Hell.

Never heard of Charles Adams? Thats no laughing matter, and you can put it right now this instant by searching for Jimsters excellent article on him.
Besides, you have heard of him, or have you never heard of The Adams Family? He created them.

Oh, that would be Charles Addams ! No wonder I couldn't find any cartoonist by the name of "Adams" on Google !
Interesting, his style is very similar to french cartoonist Sempe's.

Sorry, I meant Matt Groening was better known as an animator, however did start off as a cartoonist... But's much better at the Simpsons

Actually, I really like Groening's Life In Hell series... les mainstream than the Simpsons, and very witty

He created the Simpsons and draws them but does he actually animate them - i.e. drawing several frames, colouring them, using lip sync and then putting them all together?
Groening also created Futurama which is just as good as the Simpsons (In my opinion anyway)

As good as the simpsons... I dunno. Characters without yellow skins somehow disturb me
