Ziele der GerManiaConnection sind:

• Über die deutschsprachigen Länder ehrlich und objektiv zu berichten (in Foren und Beiträgen)
• Das allgemeine Bild dieser Länder außerhalb deren Grenzen zurecht zu rücken.
• Kontakt zwischen deutschsprechenden Mitgliedern mit gemeinsamen Interessen und Wohngegenden herzustellen
• Ansprechpartner für besuchende H2G2-ler, die nach D/A/CH reisen wollen oder dort wohnen werden

The aims of the GerManiaConnection are:

• to report honestly and objectively on the German speaking countries in forums and entries
• To correct the unfavourable picture generally perpetuated outside these countries
• To create contact between German speaking researchers with similar interests or who live near each other
• To provide information and contact with local Germans/Austrians/Swiss for other H2G2 researchers going on holiday or moving to the area

Unser "Engländer" hat sich Gedanken zum Thema Leitkultur gemacht und diese auf dieser Seite zu "Papier" gebracht. Jeder ist aufgefordert, sich Gedanken zum Thema zu machen und zu einer Definition der deutschen Leitkultur beizutragen. Die Diskussion ist inzwischen in der Politik und sogar bei den Kirchen aufgegriffen worden. Wir sind weiterhin aufgefordert, uns über dieses heikle Thema Gedanken zu machen.

A German politician (right wing) has made a very controversial comment that all immigrants to Germany should adapt to the basic German culture, he used the word "Leitkultur" which smacks of the "Master Culture" idea propagated during the Third Reich. This has provoked a discussion (in German) - follow the link given in the German text. The discussion is still ongoing - IRL it has caused a rumpus in both political and ecclesiastial circles.

Wird nur in Englisch erklärt!!

The language is not as hard and guttural as it is reputed to sound (for example, like in Chaplin's "Dictator"), and can be expressive and is extremely concise. Nevertheless, a translation into German is usually several lines longer than, say, an English original.

The character "ß" is equivalent to "ss". The letter "S" at the beginning of a word should be voiced, i.e. a "zzzz" sound. The Umlauts

• change the sound of a, which is otherwise always pronounce "aaah" to "eh", or similar to "ai" in "mail"
• change the sound of o, which is otherwise always pronounce "or" to "ur" as in "Burn"
• change the sound of u, which is otherwise always pronounce "oooh" to a very posh-sounding "u", as if you were saying the word "You" but got stuck on the "Y"

Irgendwie schaffen es die Deutschen immer noch nicht, auf 2 und 4 zu klatschen, kann mir jemand dieses Phänomen erklären - liegt es an einer jahrhundertlange Tradition der Marschmusik mit der Betonung auf 1 und 3? Ansonsten ist Deutschland natürlich für die klassischen Komponisten besonders bekannt und viele große Musiker von heute treten gerne vor deutschem Publikum auf.

Music:

Particularly famous for its composers, Germany has always been very active on the music scene. Most big pop stars these days are quoted as liking German audiences very much, as they know all the words of the songs and are very attentive listeners. Somehow the German public (even the younger ones) still seem to have marches in their blood, and no way can any performer get them to clap on the 2 and the 4 - even if you start them off right, after about 3 bars, they are clapping on 1 and 3 again. It's most disconcerting and has ruined many concerts for me!!

Germany is not as well organised as it is reputed to be. You get buses and trains running late - or not at all, and chaos at most privately organised events. The tradesmen are notorious for not coming on time, or at all, or not phoning back or bodging up their work.

If you are staying in Germany for more than a certain period (three months or so) you must register with the local police. Find the nearest Ausländeramt. If you are at university, you will be advised about this, and if you don't know where to go, grab another foreign student and get them to show you. If you are working, your HR people should help.

Driving licences should also be transferred to German ones. The rules may be different now, but it used to be you had 9 months to get yourself a German licence. Be careful, they stamp your original one.

The speed limits are 50 kph in built up areas, 130 on the motorways, but this latter one is a guideline, unless specifically signposted.
Don't look for "Umleitung" (yellow signs), "Ausfahrt" or "Einbahnstraße" (blue and white signs) on a map - they mean "diversion", "exit" and "one way street" respectively.

Driving and Insurance

Don't worry if someone asks you to drive their car or lends you their car. The Insurance system in Germany is such that the car itself is insured, regardless of who is driving.

Car Registration numbers

One of the first things you can't help noticing on arriving in Germany is that the cars are registered with numbers that clearly show where they come from. If you move house, but keep the same car, you have to re-register it and it gets a new number. The system is very simple, with the largest towns having one letter at the beginning (e.g. D for Düsseldorf), smaller towns having two letters (MG for Mönchengladbach) and rural areas and towns having three letters. These abbreviations are also often used for shortening the name of the town - and may also be used on road signs, so watch out for those. Köln-Deutz, for example, may be written K-Deutz. If you start to get fascinated by these registration numbers, lists are available from the ADAC (German motoring club) or on this web site and click "Kfz.-Kennz." at the top left.

In Deutschland ißt man sehr viel Schweinefleisch. Das wird mit Sauerkraut und Senf wieder verdaulich gemacht. Außerdem sind die Kuchen riesengroß und reichhaltig und werden mit reichlich Sahne serviert. Die Deutschen betrachten das Essen als nötiges Übel und in Betrieben ist eine Mittagspause von 30 min durchaus üblich. Viele Leute sind skeptisch den orientalischen Küchen gegenüber, essen jedoch sehr gern italienisch oder griechisch. Die fleischarmen italienischen Pasta und Pizza-Gerichten bieten eine willkommene Abwechslung zum schwereren deutschen Hausmannskost.

Überhaupt geht man sehr oft und kurz entschlossen ins Restaurant. Auswärts essen ist nicht so teuer und wird auch unter der Woche praktiziert. Noch neigt der gestandene Deutsche dazu, sich eher über ein Schnitzel zu freuen, das über den Tellerrand hinausragt, als über ein feines Kartoffelgratin oder einen delikat angemachten Salat

Deutsche Weine stehen anderen Weinen aus Frankreich oder Italien inzwischen in nichts nach. Es wäre schön, wenn jemand darüber einen Beitrag schreiben würde!!

The Germans tend to eat a great deal of pork. This is heavy going and the digestion can be assisted by the traditional Sauerkraut and plenty of mustard. Cakes are enormous and rich, and are readily served with large helpings of whipped cream. For the Germans, eating is a necessary evil and it is quite common to be begrudged only 30 minutes lunch break. Many are sceptical about oriental food, although Italian and Greek restaurants are very popular. The Italian pizza and pasta, often without any meat ingredients are a welcome relief from the usual German fare.

Eating in restaurants is very common, as it is not too expensive, and often a family or couple will even just pop out spontaneously in the middle of the week. However, a "real" German "man" is still more impressed by a schnitzel which hangs over both sides of the plate that he is by a well-dressed salad or a tasty, light gratin dauphinois.

German wines are of extremely good quality and great variety, red and white. With guidance, you will find a good wine to match or surpass any French or Italian wine. This is a subject for a Guide Entry -any volunteers!!??

Am 3.Oktober 1990 wurden die DDR und BR Deutschland nach der 40 jährigen Trennung wiedervereinigt. Es wurden die politischen Strukturen der BR Deutschland übernommen. Es gibt zur Zeit 16 Länder und Landesregierungen und eine Bundesregierung bestehend aus Bundestag und Bundesrat (Länderkammer).

Obwohl man nach einigen Medienberichten den Eindruck bekommen könnte, besteht Deutschland nicht zum grossen Teil aus Neonazis. Der Eindruck mag dadurch entstehen, dass auch kleinere rassistische Ausschreitungen schon eine grosse Resonanz erzeugen. Dies ist sicher durch die jüngere deutsche Geschichte bedingt, welche teilweise auch zu einem gewissen Anti-Patriotismus (ausser beim Sport, besonders Fussball) und einer Abneigung gegen unnötige Uniformen (Schule etc.) führt.

Wie alle modernen Demokratien in Europa und dem Rest der Welt gibt es ein breites Parteienspektrum. Zur Zeit sind fünf Parteien im Bundestag in Berlin vetreten:

On 3 October 1990, the German Democratic Republic and the German Federal Republic were reunited after 40 years' separation. The political structure hitherto applied in the (Western) Federal Republic were spread to the Eastern States. At present there are 16 States, each with its own government, and a Federal Government, this last composed of the Bundestag ("lower house") and Bundesrat ("upper house").
Despite the impression given by the internationl media, Germany is not a country of Neonazis. This impression probably arises from the fact that even the smallest racial transgression attracts a great deal of attention. Naturally this is a sore point in the light of Germany's recent history, which has also led to a degree of anti-patriotism (except in sport, particularly football) and an aversion to uniforms (e.g. in schools).
As in all modern democracies in Europe and elsewhere in the world, the political parties cover a wide political spectrum. At the present time (October 2000) five parties have seats in the Bundestag in Berlin:

Der Bundestag sitzt seit dem 19.April 1999 im umgebauten Reichstagsgebäude im Zentrum Berlins (nahe des Brandenburger Tores und man hat vom Dach einen herrlichen Blick auf die Stadt :-)).
Zur Zeit regiert eine Koalition aus SPD und B'90/Die Grünen mit Gerhard Schröder als Bundeskanzler und Joschka Fischer als Aussenminister. Die nächsten Wahlen sind im Jahr 2002.

The Bundestag returned to its original location in the newly renovated Reichstag in the centre of Berlin on 19 April 1999. (This is near the Brandenburger Tor. From the roof you have a wonderful view of the City) :-)).
The Government at present is a coalition of SPD and Greens. Gerhard Schröder is the Chancellor and Joschka Fischer his Foreign Minister. The next elections are in 2002.
