Just go through the forum, find a section that's not been taken, announce that you're pinching it, then go do it.

I think I should pop in here and express my gratitude to you all and explain my view on the Ace v GAs.
This, as far as I know is the only area where both Aces and GAs work together in harmony and I take pride in that.
I does not matter if a newcomer gets two or even three people greeting them as long as it does not turn into a conversation between greeters and nothing or very little from the newcomer.
I have always advocated that if you go to a page where a newcomer has already been welcomed, you can either move on to the next newcomer or greet the newbie by starting a new conversation/forum. This way the new person will feel great about it. I have often read a newbies comments and pride in actually having two people visiting their Space, where as it does not feel that way when everybody converges onto the same forum.
Many GAs say that they will get an official greeting by an Ace soon - so it is nice when that happens.
Everybody is welcome to participate in this venture Aces, Non Aces, It would be good if every newcomer was greeted by an Ace and a GA and a researcher who just happens to drop in.
As long as you check out the newcomers likes and dislikes and comment on thier work todate they will feel welcome and thats all that is needed to ensure they come back for more.
Wow - did I just say all that. Phew!
Cach you all soon.

By greeting people via whose online you catch people 'live' which is a very important thing to be doing. This page is to ensure everyone who has activated their page is greeted even if a little late. So either plod through a section or continue to zoom about at random - the choice is yours and either way is valuable.

Hmmmmm
That's a good point.
Starting a seperate thread for each greeter.
How many times have I been back to a greeting thread I have placed, only to find it's not a reply by the newbie, but another greeting by someone else, and I, too, have been guilty of doing that. It is annoying, as there's nothing else you can add, because you have already been there. Are we all agreed on that then? New thread for each greeting?
Thanks for all your hard work, vegiman

New thread for each greeting? Awwww, and I just had the most interesting discussion on smileys involving me, the newcomer and another welcomer, all in one thread...
...guess it's worth a try, though...

I think the point that was trying to be made was, for the greeters not to engage in a conversation in which the newcomer feels excluded, kinda like a wallflower? By all means, carry on if that's what you want to do. Obviously we are not going to please all of us, making rules. Play it by ear? Wing it?Each do our own thing? So long as we don't upset anyone or put them off returning that's the main thing. There's a fine line between friendliness & smothering, I think.

Greetings
Since there seems to be so much confusion regarding this list of necommers, I've decided to simply stick with my pre-ACE method of checking the Who's Online and greeting people as I see them.
If this causes some of us to "bump heads" in the future, please accept my 'apologies' now, but please don't refer me back to this newcomer's list to select a group. Please feel free to say 'Hi' to me too, as I'll be doing the same to you guys when I see you.
A couple ACEs and I bumped into each other a few times because of the groups I selected on this page. Refering me back here didn't do any good because this is where I got the information to go to some of the Researchers where we bumped into each other anyway.
Also, the reason I selected the groups I did was because I had already greeted some of the people in them before becoming an ACE and I figured I'd finish up the groups they were in. Some of the instances of me bumping into people were greetings I left before even hearing about this newcommer's list. (You can tell which ones these are because I make no claim to being an ACE in them.)
I think this list is a great idea to make sure people don't get missed, but checking the Who's Online seems less confusing to me as far as greeting people in general, and you get a list that refreshes itself every five minutes.
Well, although I may not be stopping by this particular page very much in the future, I still look forward to meeting those of you I haven't met yet, and to working with you all. You're a great bunch of hoopy froods. The way I see it, If we just greet each other or make some other friendly comment when we 'bump heads', instead of refering each other back here, we only show a better example to the newcommers of how much of a friendly place H2G2 is.

I got tired of twiddling my thumbs, so I've been greeting people on the Who's Online too....
...and I don't mind bumping heads....

*ouch!*
Yes, I havebeen greeting people on the online list, the immediate reaction is sometimes beneficial, eg, last night I spotted "ibchristine" and went to her page, left her a greeting, yold her about my Archangel Party & she turned up! This morning I logged on to find she had also added me to her list of friends on Yahoo Messenger! Yet others appear to ignore the greetings...oh, well, that's people for you!!
Happy head-bumping, folks!
{I never yet heard of a newbie complaining of being greeted TOO many times; yesterday I found a SAINT who had not been greeted by anybody!!} Better lots of greetings, than none at all, I say!!!

Sorry - The Towers have not sent me the raw data yet for the next list so it will be late - they are most likely working hard on new updates which may automate this list and will mean no more waiting.
I will be retired off to some pasture
I have read all your comments and agree with most.
The who-is-on-line should be the first option to meet and greet newbies. This list is just a backup to catch those who got missed - so there is no need to say you will use one method or another - They all are tools which can be used to locate newcomers.
Bumping heads - OOooo Painful
I agree with Androyd - I do not advocate we stay out of forums where a discussion with a newbie is already in play. Join in - this is the h2g2 way and the friendly thing to do.
I am just saying I have seen forums where only greeters are there and the newbie ignoring them and making postings everywhere but on the forum where they are supposed to be welcomed.
This is why I advised a new conversation and like all advice, it is only a guideline and not a rule.
This has been bought up before but I will resurrect it for new Aces and Angels.
When making a posting to a newbie read their page fist and bring in something personal to the newcomer - Praise and a question - We all tend to use a standard greeting - it saves typing time - but add something personal to each posting to stop it sounding like an automated posting, which some newcomers have said 'I thought it was an automatic posting which did not need answering'.
So do not fall into the trap...
Sorry for the late list
catcha as soon as it is ready.
