A Conversation for Talking Point: Vanity and the Knife

So, more than once (though less than regularly ) I've undergone a long, painful procedure to become more beautiful. I do it with the assistance of professionals, and with the complicity of my doctor. Its goal is to make me more attractive, and I've suffered a bit of blood loss now and again because of it. If you've read the subject, you know ... I go to the gym. So, my talking points here:
How is this different (let's say I don't do this for the health benefits),
How is plastic surgery different from trimming my nails?
How about smearing my head with minoxidil (please don't read this as an invite)?
How about makeup (i.e., temporary tatoos)?
Dressing well?
Dressing deceptively (i.e., to hide my hypothetical paunch 'neath a suit)?

It's a grey area, that's for sure. Then again going to the gym takes time and effort and I for one can't be bothered with it. I admit my lack of will-power. Is it vain to make onself more attractive in order to attract members of the opposite/same sex? Or does one need to have higher purposes like health in order to make it not a vain pursuit?
