Well I live in Boston but can drive to NY. I think it would be interesting to meet up and no one seems to live in Mass.

Courtney,
Of course you're welcome... it would be great to have you...
As for the slaughtered lamb... I'm normally anti-theme restaurants, but I've never been to that one...
Anyhow, let's do a poll... Anyone underage? S'ok if you are... we still like you

Courtney Patron Saint of Social Embarassment Posted Oct 3, 2000
If anyone else from Mass wants to go I drive (it's not that scary) and doing mind giving anyone a lift.
What is the slaughtered lamb?

jimmiejaz Posted Oct 3, 2000
As I said, it was just an idea, nothing is written in stone yet, is it?
The Lamb is a pub with a horror theme.

Kumabear's from Massachucetts, I believe...
And I'm 19, so as much as I'd like to get trashed it ain't gonna be in a bar.
Triv

dumb question..... where's the cheapest place in manhattan to get smokes? around me they're $5.50 a pack
Incidentally...
bumbee Posted Oct 4, 2000
I don't think you can get cigarettes for much less than that with taxes and all. And I think that a bar/restaurant sounds like a great idea, that way we can all meet up, and those of us who want to drink don't have to ditch everyone else. Can anyone think of another place to go that's not an overly-expensive bar/restaurant?

I think since we're not that many people we should go and hang out with Dr. Funk & his electric violin in Red Hook, Brooklyn. Advantage: lots of onstreet, free parking; lack of pretension or cover charge; unlikelihood that Triv will be kicked out for being underage (assuming, of course, that he sticks to club soda). I count jimmijaz, courtney, spaceboy, me (jqr), triv, funk, and bumbee. Since Peta listed us for a friday, I'd rather stick to that date, which means that Dr. Funk is going to be in Red Hook.
If lots of people are going to be driving, I think it would be better to meet in Brooklyn, where there is cheaper parking. We could try Yabby's (see Williamsburg entry) or Le Gamin down by the foot of the Brooklyn Bridge. One good place to meet with people and chat in Manhattan, however, is Cedar Tavern, on University Place and 11th Street. It has an upstairs with nice big tables and comfortable chairs, a kitchen (for hungry people) and a nice vibe. Or how about Chinatown? We could have an inexpensive Chinese banquet. Sun Lok Kee, on Mott St near Chatham Square, does large parties well.

Ooops--sorry folks, but my work is taking me to San Francisco for that weekend (I just found out today), so I'll officially have to bag on the lot of you. But I think y'all should follow jqr's advice there. If so many folks are driving, some place in Brooklyn would be better because otherwise, folks with cars could be driving around for an hour looking for a space or paying a small fortune to a parking garage. Sunny's (the place in Red Hook) would be a great place to meet--it's spacious, friendly, and--despite the fact that it's only open on Fridays--absolutely the least pretentious place I have ever been in, at least in New York. For those of you with cars, it's on Conover Street between Read and Beard; for those of you relying on public transportation, you take the B61 (I'm 99% sure it's the B61) to Red Hook and get off at either Conover or Beard.
Have fun!

Dr. Funk Posted Oct 4, 2000
As a further endorsement for Sunny's, I should add the following detail: they have a "suggested donation" of 3 dollars per drink, whatever you want. I'm not kidding.
Friday?
Shea the Sarcastic Posted Oct 6, 2000
Are you definitely going to meet on a Friday night?
Unfortunately, I work nights (or fortunately - sleeping in on weekdays is pretty cool).
If so, I guess I'll just be there in spirit (I'll be the one making the candlelight flicker, and rapping on the table bottom).
Friday?
jimmiejaz Posted Oct 7, 2000
Well I'm sure that some of us wouldn't mind meeting up in the day. I know I wouldn't mind.
Friday?
Courtney Patron Saint of Social Embarassment Posted Oct 7, 2000
Just a thought, what if we meet on a saturday. It might be easier for others to get together with us. *just a thought*
Friday?
jqr Posted Oct 11, 2000
Can we open that question up to the group at large? Tell the truth, when I first heard of the idea I figured it would attract folks who lived within commuting distance of NYC and therefore would either a) live in NY and be accustomed to going out on Friday night to somewhere in the city; b) live and work elsewhere in the tristate area but be accustomed to coming to the city for fun, like opera or movies; c) work in NY and be able to hang out after work to meet fellow Researchers.
I think it's really exciting, Courtney, that you're willing to hop in the car and come to NY to see some people you've never met before. So what day would be best for you?
Friday?
Courtney Patron Saint of Social Embarassment Posted Oct 12, 2000
I work monday-friday 8 am-5pm so I would have to take off in the afternoon from Boston to get there at a decent time, and on the weekends work in a bar, but it is a lot easier for me to get time off from the bar then from my day job.
Basically a Saturday would be better but Friday would work too. I usually get what I want from my bosses.
Friday?

me: 17. my hours: 7:30am to 6:00pm. yes, saturdays would ultimately be better. Might I suggest Kenny's Castaways, down in Greenwich Village? I have no trouble getting in there.
