Talking Point: Inventions and Time Travel

A telephone

Invention:n. A new device, method, or process developed from study and experimentation.

Have you ever wondered what the implications would be if you could take a modern day invention or discovery back in time? For instance, what would happen if someone transported antibiotics back to the dark ages?

We, the modern day populace, think we're so much more knowledgeable than our ancestors. But are we? Would there be any useful invention, discovery or theory that you personally could take back in time, and replicate or prove yourself?

For instance:

  • The light bulb was invented by Thomas Edison in 1879. But do you understand how light bulbs work? Could you actually make - or commission - one from raw materials?

  • The telephone was invented by Alexander Graham Bell in 1876. But could you re-create that first call?

Secondly, if it were possible to transport inventions back in time, which ones should we pick? Would your great-great grandmother be more impressed by a microwave oven or a microlight aircraft?

You decide...
