We haven't gotten to the Muses yet in my Mythology class, so I've been holding off on answering this question.
As for the h2g2 crowd of Muses - I find them all endlessly a-Musing! smiley - winkeye

Amy: ear-deep in novels, poetics, and historical documents.

Let's see... Calliope, Uterpe, Clio, little of Erato (I'm such a poet). smiley - smiley

Hmm, I need to read up on the original nine a bit more... I only recognized about three of those names.

There is only one thing worse than being Gosho, and that is not being Gosho

Ok. I don't pretend to know anything about this subject, but here's what any of us can glean if we do a websearch...

Calliope (Calliopeia), Muse of Epic Poetry. Usually seen with a writing tablet, a roll of paper, or a book in hand. Took a bit of a fancy to Achilles smiley - winkeye
Clio ("The Proclaimer" - that means she speaks with a thick Scottish accent and wears heavy-rimmed specs), Muse of of history, often seen sitting with a scroll. Gave birth to Hyacinth (not Bucket - a beautiful youth fancied by Apollo, although he said they were just good friends. Yeah right).
Erato ("The Lovely"), Muse of love poetry and mimicry, often seen with a lyre, and sometimes wears a crown of roses.
Euterpe ("The Giver of Pleasure") Muse of music. Plays the flute. By Strymon, she bore Rhesus who was topped at Troy not long after he got off the boat.
Melpomene ("The Songstress"). Muse of tragedy, in spite of her joyous singing and is represented by the tragic mask (sounds like a case of manic depression to me). She is sometimes seen with a garland, a club and a sword. Gave birth to The Sirens, without which police cars, fire engines, and ambulances would be buggered.
Polyhymnia (Polymnia), "She of Many Hymns". Muse of Sacred Poetry. Often seen with a pensive look upon her face, but sometimes veiled. She has also been called the Muse of geometry, mime, meditation and agriculture. Yeah, she's the one responsible for tangents, sines, cosines, (probably logarythms too) and bloody Pythagoras.
Terpsichore ("The Whirler"), Muse of dancing. Often seen dancing with her lyre in hand and a plectrum - a small piece of plastic used for plucking stringed instruments..... except that they didn't have plastic in them days. By the river god Achelous, she bore the Sirens. Unless it was Melpomene who did that. Still other stories say that Porthaƶn was mother of The Sirens. Very confusing.
Thalia (Thaleia) "The Flourishing", Muse of comedy and of playful and idyllic poetry. Seen with a comic mask, also sometimes seen with a crown of ivy and a crook. By Apollo, Thalia had the Corybantes, priests who castrated themselves in identification with the goddess, Cybele. Ouch.
Urania "The Heavenly", Muse of astronomy. Represented by a staff pointed at a celestial globe. She foretells the future by the position of the stars. In other words, she's Patric Walker.... well, maybe not, but he did live on a Greek island after all.

The leader of The Muses was Apollo, who, quite frankly, put it about a bit, and he didn't mind whether it was with men or women (I haven't been able to find out if he went around with sheep, but you never know).

So whenever anyone asks you about The Muses, you can floor them with your knowledge. Thank you and goodnight.
