A Conversation for The h2g2 Symphony Orchestra
Is there a choir, too?
Trillian's child Started conversation Sep 13, 2000
I can't play (apart from 10 years of piano lessons, 20 years ago), but would love to join a choir. I have sung several oratorios and a few opera and operetta choruses and some Gilbert and Sullivan and would suggest either any of these or some gospel songs for popularity's sake.
My voice is mezzo, I tend usually to join the altos.
Otherwise I would be happy to turn pages for anyone who has got something better to do with his hands.

This is a great idea, I'm in ! (except for the gospelsongs )
Should this be another entry or will our collaboration with the symphony orchestra make us stay here???
I'll suggest Ein Deutsches Requiem by Brahms.
Njan, can I sing *and* play the bass clarinet *and* the triangle
Please put me on at least one of the instruments.

I am not into Gospel songs, either, I just think it's what the public would enjoy.
If we are suggesting works, I think at this time we should start working on the Messiah or Bach's Christmas Oratorio, or do we have a composer who could arrange a custom-built medley of international Christmas carols: After Christmas we could then throw ourselves into the Matthew Passion. I have also sung some Arthur Honnegger - a Swiss composer. Have you heard of him in the UK?
If very few people turn up, I would like to revive Swing. Some of the brass players have mentioned Big Bands (I think) and I always wanted to sing like the Andrews Sisters along with other girls. Or if it was mixed, would that be more sort of like Manhattan Transfer or who was that guy back in the 60's - Sergio Mendes.

By "If very few people turn up" I meant that if we weren't enough for a proper oratorio choir, we could do smaller things.
Should the majority prefer, in that case, I would also enjoy doing madrigals.

Maybe those interested should form something like "The H2G2 Choral Society", separately from the orchestra. Then the two setups could collaborate to do things like, I dunno, Mahler's 3rd Symphony...

OK, but before I go, let me suggest one more work:
The Chichester Psalms by Leonard Bernstein.
And, as it only requires a harp, an organ and percussion, the orchestra could come and sing along!

I can be a bass or a tenor. I'd like to suggest a piece: "Cantate Domino". Is this going to be SATB??? Just wanting to make several detached sentences. Can I join?

Yes, well, it's all subjective until someone sets the choir up...

yes, right, um.... a choir would be a wonderful idea. A few people asked me on ICQ if there is one, so I'm sure there'll be lots of people. Krans, or one of the other experienced h2g2 people in the forum: do you fancy setting one up? As I said in the other forum, I'm sort of bogged-down with A-Levels at the moment (and having a crisis as to which ones to drop: I'm changing A-Levels 2 weeks into the course) and I don't really have the time at the moment. I'm sure I will later.

Oh, and btw, I'll have to insist that we do Gilbert and Sullivan's Pirates of Penzance, and that I be the Major-General, because I know all the words, and can sing it up to speed. .. (Krans has probably heard me. I tend to sing it quietly in big rests when I'm playing clarinet in orchestras, also on coaches, in rooms, etc. I like the song.)

If a choir does get set up, my range is baritone to alto (I'm a freak ) and I tend to like more modern songs (like gospel which is really fun to sing) for singing's sake

Stick Njan in as well...
You could follow the format of the orchestra page... show a "family resembance"... if you want.
