Eating Out

Hi folks!
Quick introduction: I'm Simon... New to H2G2. I've been vegan for over a year now, and veggie since I figured out where meat came from...
I have friends in lots of parts of England, as a lot of people scattered when they went away to university, so often I go away for the weekend to visit.
Most of them are meat eaters or standard vegetarians, (I only know a couple of other vegans) so eating can be difficult. I pretty much always go to the nearest supermarket and cook a meal for everyone. This is okay, but sometimes tiresome, but I obviously shouldn't expect people to be able to cater for me just like that because I know how difficult it is.
So my question is, does anybody know of any good alternatives? (Restaraunts etc...) I regularly visit London (isle of dogs), Chester, Oxford & Birmingham. Can anybody suggest anywhere (pref. not too expensive) where I can get nice vegan food in these areas?
Thanks
Simon
