Thought we needed a definitive entry on Fort Worth. Cuz that's where I live! (Hmmm... geocentrism...) Good info for tourists and such.

-Lentilla

BTW: How do I make the entry into a button? Can't seem to get the forum post out of regular text.

I usually just type http://www.h2g2.com/A411599 .

And now that it's a link, I'm on my way there...

The title's a bit wordy, but it's an excellent article.

There's just one phrase that's missing: "Fort Worth - Where the West Begins". (As opposed to "Dallas - Where the East Ends".)

Nice entry. As a big history buff, I was wondering if you could say more about Fort Worth's history, though--like what the "Fort Worth" in Fort Worth is, for example--or did I miss it in your article? Anyway, I like it, and think it does Fort Worth proud. I also think it's worth doing an entry on the Stockyards, because, tourist trap though it is, it's still worth visiting and is of (here I go again) historical interest--at least, I thought it was.

Oh yeah, also, I was wondering about the Sundance Square area. What was it because it was a revitalized downtown? If there was a period of decline, what caused it? And has the revitalization been successful?

I thought about calling it: Fort Worth - Where the West Beguines, but reconsidered. Decided I was being too clever.

BTW: came to a revelation the other day... has nothing to do with Fort Worth. The dance called the 'beguine' comes from Jamaica, and was part of the Negro culture. We still have the beguine today - we call it the boogie!

You might consider a paragraph on Amos Carter and the famous Dallas-Fort Worth rivalry.

I've been trying to decide how much to put in this entry. When I first started it, it was way too huge and unwieldy. I cut it down somewhat before I submitted it.

There should really be an entry on the DFW area - Dallas, Fort Worth, and Arlington - because while the residents of each city feel very independent, the three cities together make up a huge "metroplex" that dwarfs many major American cities. Arlington is unusual for being the largest city in America without a public transportation system. Dallas is a mix of the poor and the rich - crack houses sit side by side with opulent townhomes. Fort Worth is built on the assistance of the rich, but for the good of all (or at least, most). Dallas and Fort Worth have the most marvelous love-hate relationship - quotes like "Life is too short to live in Dallas" or as Molly Ivins sez: "In Dallas it's called sushi; in Fort Worth we call it bait." Fort Worthians put down the pretentious nature of Dallas, but we envy the raging club scene they have going on, and all the cool restaurants. Maybe I'll put in a sub-header on Amon Carter and the sibling rivalry between Dallas/Fort Worth - it really deserves at least a note.

I've inserted a little more info on the Stockyards, because I thought it might be interesting... Perhaps I need to include more links, so that people who are interested in the subject can find out more.

If you think something should be in this article that isn't, please let me know - I'll get together more information and update it in a couple of days. Thanks for the suggestions! - Lentilla

Cool. A friend of mine has it - she's Vietnamese, and so she didn't get the treatment at an early age that she needed.

Well, I re-read this monstrosity after a few weeks. I decided that I've picked up this horrible writing style which involves the use of lots of commas, semi-colons, and incomplete sentences - which is fine if you're writing an e-mail or letter or even an inter-office memorandum, but not so great if you're trying to write a readable essay. So I trimmed it a little - just a bris, nothing major. Check it out if you have time.

I just can't seem to leave this dead cow - I mean horse alone...

Put the dang thing through more major revisions. Added some info about some of the cow moguls of Fort Worth - figured they needed a mention. Took some info out that didn't need to be there.

All in all, I think it's a better article. Now I'm afraid it's too unwieldy - too much information. Or is that possible? I will put on my cowgirl costume and go play with my stuffed cow... Bessie always knows all the answers.

1. Now I don't need to go write that entry on the Stockyards. Well done.

2. I skipped most of the history of Fort Worth's first cattlemen, but it would probably make an excellent separate entry.

3. The title on the "tornado" section should probably be "The Fort Worth Tornado of 2000" or something, not "Recent Events in Fort Worth", which isn't exactly a title to last the ages.

Hmmm... Yeah, you've got a point, there. I'm not sure if I should even leave the stuff about the tornado in there, except that it gives the piece a conclusion. Whaddya think?

Well written entry. The closest I've been is Arlington in 1995 for a Trek convention.

Lentilla, a sneak preview subbed version of your excellent yarn lives at http://www.h2g2.com/A472574 where it will be for a couple of days until I send it back to h2g2 Towers.

If you want to make any changes we can discuss them in this forum.

Hmmm...

Perhaps: "In the minds of many people, the name 'Fort Worth' is synonymous with two things: cowboys and beef."
Or: "Fort Worth reminds people of two things: cowboys and beef." I think this would lead into the first para. a little better.

Southwestern should not be hyphenated.

The only other change I would make is to group the various attractions under different subheadings: the Stockyards, the Cultural District, and downtown. (see orig.) In Fort Worth, these are very different geographical locations - visitors will want to know what attractions are available in each location. The entertainment listings are only from the Stockyards area - I didn't even get to mention my favorite bars in Ft. Worth!

You could probably leave out the twister section entirely, as all that will change within the next year or so.

Looks great. I look forward to the final version!

Lentilla, I have made your changes. There is still time to list some popular bars - post them here and I will add them. Do you know of any relevant h2g2 Edited Guide entrys this one should be linked to?

Microsoft's spell check insists Southwestern is hypenated smiley - bigeyes
