A Conversation for FLAMENCO TABLAO
The perfect tablao.

The tablao is, of course, the dance surface.
It is often assumed that flamenco dancers like the same sort of surface as tap dancers - hard and unyeilding. Tiled or marble floors are sometimes offered. This is not the case. The surface shoud be on some kind of suspended flooring, if not actually sprung. And with a good grip.
A perfectly serviceable modern tablao can be created on top of any surface, even solid concrete, with the use of enough carpet underlay, or carpet, or packing card, and enough sheets of weather-ply or MDF, painted with stage black and gaffered together.
The best stage we ever worked on was in a 600 nyear old pub in Canterbury called The Penny. Its loving owner ahd restored its stage using recycled oak on top of twenty tons of sand. It resonated like a lute underfoot.
In an act of vandalism, it is now one of the chain of 'Scream' pubs for students.
