Some text and smileys would be nice... I tried to use the XML ended up with a either a blank entry or the code as if it were set to plain text even though it was set GuideML...

For GuideML you must a) use the change style button b) not use normal smileys.

In GuideML mode you can't use any of the smileys for text mode, or <./></.> links. You have to use the and <SMILEY TYPE="smiley"/> tags instead.

When you change style, you'll find and tags placed around the code, make sure that you put your text inside these otherwise it'll be ignored.

Ah that could be the problem. You don't need the tags.

Try this verbatim as a GuideML entry

<SMILEY TYPE='ok'/>

You don't seem to have changed the style of the article smiley - erm. Below the big box for text on the edit page are two radio buttons marked Plain Text and GuideML. Select GuideML and click the Change Style button just to the right. Then you should see the smiley on the page smiley - ok

Well with the article tags round the content, you would have confused the system as to the structure of the article, because it would only see the outer set of ARTICLE tags, not any GUIDE tags as it was expecting.

Well when you view a page using the test url, <./>test991686</.>, the system adds tags round it for technical reasons. These tags have to be ignored when writing the articles however.
