It seemed pretty clear to me that the categories referred to how chavs classify *other* people, but there you go.

I thought that too, but actually it's not chavs who have devised all those descriptions.

A bit too hiss claw? I should say so!

Whilst nicely written in many ways, it is a personal rant and not a balanced and factual entry, as per the Writing-Guidelines.

If you'ld like to take this forward, can I suggest that you take it out of this review forum, and submit it to the Alternative Writing Workshop (<./>Writing-Alternative</.&gtsmiley - winkeye where you are more likely to pick up an appreciative audience.

Oh I don't know, it doesn't need a lot of tweaking to make it clear that this is a summary of what people think a chav is, and that's a suitable subject for the guide isn't it? A summary of ephemeral cultural perceptions or sociological phenomonons (which I'd define as the use of the word chav rather than the group itself, but there you go)/ definitions of slang?

Yes that would be an entry worthy of inclusion in the EG. However that isn't what we've got here. This entry as it stands is merely a list of insulting generalisations. Try re-reading it and substitute the word 'black' or 'jew' or 'p*ki' for the word chav. See what I mean?

"Try re-reading it and substitute the word 'black' or 'jew' or 'p*ki' for the word chav."

But surely being a chav is a lifestyle choice, and is therefore a more valid subject for ridicule than skin colour or racial origin.

The article could be seen as insulting and not informative. At least I think that's GreyDesk's point smiley - erm

But my point is that insulting someone's choice of dress or behaviour is not as bad as insulting their skin colour.

That's true.

Be that as it may, insulting it remains.

Plus, there are those who would argue that the choice element in determining your lifestyle is 1) not as great as you think and 2) not exactly in your hands. In other words, chavs are the result of the world around them.

People who decide to live off the state because they're simply too lazy to do anything else? This doesn't come down to lack of self-worth or anything, these people are simply wasters.

Ah, sociology, after all? You see, being that this particular aspect of chavism was not known to me (and was not explained in the article, more to the point), it was rather hard for me... erm, to know this.

I think this is a really good entry, to be honest. It does need some work, as detailed above, but I don't think anyone could find it offensive (except residents of Acock Green - that does push it a bit, to be fair). People are being quite proud of calling themselves chavs (in the same way is was once quite cool to be a spiv or a geezer) because they fit the stereotype chav teamelectra has outlined. The Sun even sold newspapers with a cut-out car sticker 'Chav And Proud'.

It does need some adjustments, but these have been covered thoroughly above. Get to it!

I agree wholeheartedly with Skankyrich. I originally suggested that teamelectra submit her entry to Peer Review since I thought it had real merit. It's funny yet informative, and though this may be the unpopular view, it's a part of our life here on Earth and so really belongs in the Guide.

That's all I've got to say, really.

I'm with Greydesk here

I like the entry, however it is not IMHO an EG entry, it is a personal opinion piece and I think its perfect for an UG entry.

I hate the word Chav, they are scallies to me (or roadkill)

Also 'chav' royalty - Wayne Rooney and Collette Whatshername

"Chavs, roadkil, neandethal", this is really getting a bit (lot) too 'condesecending middle class' to be objective 'nuff for the guide... We can't just take the piss out of tracksuit wearing footballers wives stereotypes and try to make that some kind of defintion of a lifestyle. Even though it has some resonance with the truth, it's much too stereotyped, in my opinion, to be an edited guide entry.

To me, it is too unfair to the social group that it is "knocking", and that is too 'mean' to be in the spirit of the guide.

An entry about the social phenomenon of 'chavs' could have a place in the guide, but not in this biased and condesending form. It's just too nasty to the lifestyle it mocks! Who can say what way of life is 'better'? Why should baseball caps be seen as socially less aceeptable than a trilby, for example?
