A3887184 - How to measure your bra size
BigAl Patron Saint of Left Handers Keeper of the Glowing Pickle and Monobrows Posted Apr 13, 2005
In Footnote 3 'That's the whole point f the article'. > ...OF the article.
P.S. I don't understand the logic of adding either 4 or 5 inches to the band size. When I first read it and saw that when the band size equals the something else size then you're an A cup I thought, "Well, if these two sizes are the same, then she has no bust. There, why does she need a bra'... but then I noticed about having to add the 4 or 5 inches.
I would be interested in saome enlightenment here. (Male curiosity I'm afraid).

Mina, what is RR? (Mentioned in F48874?thread=624289&skip=0&show=20#p6881940)
radioactiveBIGAL1, the band size is the meaurement plus 4 or 5 inches. The band size isn't the size you measure. So when you're saying 'are these two the same?' you're actually asking if the bust size is 4 inches more than the measured size, or if the difference is greater than that.
Maybe a diagram is in order...?
I've added more on how to tell if a bra fits.
Thanks for the comments everyone, keep them coming (please).

Hello everybody.
This entry is about as done as it's going to get without some more suggestions.
What do you think?

I think it definitely needs to get into the EG - it's got me thinking about my bras (but I'll wait until I get back to the UK to do any measuring, not gonna be mucking about with foreign bra sizes!) and as far as I can see it's there or there abouts, anyone else see anything that needs doing to polish it up?

Here are a few last tidbits:
TYPOS --
"Of the bra leavesred marks, it is probably too small."
I'm guessing this should be "If the bra leaves red marks, it is...."
"If your breasts bulge out at the top, bottom or sides of the cups then the cups size is too small."
Should be 'cup size' rather than 'cups size'
Other issues --
"If the centre of the bra does not lie flat against your chest then it is being pushed out by breasts contained within cups that are too small."
For women with very large breats, the centre of the bra will never lie flat -- we simply haven't designed a bra yet where this is possible. Getting to come close should definitely be a goal, though. I always suggest that people bend over (like to touch their shoes) and then stand up, and check to see how well the centre of the bra tacks after that -- it will often change after some movement, and you want a bra that continues to fit when you're moving. If the centre of the bra pokes out enough to be visible under clothing, it is definitely a bad fit, no matter how large the breasts.
"In theory, a well-fitting bra should support your breasts with the straps slipped down onto your shoulders; this is a way of testing the fit."
I think you need to come right out and explain here that this should be because the band and cups should be doing the bulk of the supporting, not the straps.

Better.
For the big boob entry, you need to link to the version that will be in the EG, and not the original one. The EG version is here -- A3913472.
Right now, the introduction seems to imply that being professionally fitted is a waste of time, and this is far from the case. It's just that there's a tremendous difference dependent on *where* you are fitted. The best professional fitters are usually found at specialty bra stores -- I'm talking about the ones that cater to mastectomy clients and whatnot, not the Victoria's Secret types -- and at the high end department stores. The range of sizes carried is often a good indicator of how professional the fitting services are -- most places with competent fitters will carry at least up to an H cup, and often higher.
If a place doesn't carry a full range of cup sizes, any "mis-fitting" is actually often intentional -- even if you measure as a 34H, the 'fitter' will suggest a 38DDD if that's the largest cupsize they carry at their store.
As has been commented previously in this thread, I still really think it should read 'band size' rather than 'back size' -- the former is more commonly used, and is also less likely to give people the wrong impression.

Link changed.
I *think* I have changed all the remaining 'back's to band's. If you find any more please tell me which paragraph it's in.
The first paragraph says that getting professionally measured is 'often the bast option', but that there are times when you might want to do it yourself. I don't think it sounds as if I'm saying that it's a waste of time. I don't want to devote too much attention to the pros and cons of professional measurements, and their biases, because I want to focus to be on 'self-service' bra fitting.

The subheading above "cups" is still "Back", and the term "back" is still used rather than "band" in that section. It also still says "back" rather than band in the straps section.
As far as the professional fitting thing, it's this phrase that I find off-putting -- "a Which report on the matter suggests that many services are inadequate." Just saying that, without explaining that there are some particular types of services that tend to be excellent, and some types that tend to be bad, does a disservice in my opinion -- it paints them all with the same brush.

I found the bit about alphabetical cup sizes a bit oddly worded (not unlike that comment! )
Plus, I'm not that clear on how the sizes work, are there CCs or do letters get doubled starting with DD?
But an interesting read and well done!

I'm proud to say, I've asked for this to go in the EG (I don't usually tell people this, but just want everyone to know!)

Hi Catwoman!
Here are a few last-minute comments. The first one needs a reply from you; the rest can be handled by the subeditors if you don't get a chance to look at them.
Content:
"should support your breasts with the straps slipped down onto your shoulders"
This should surely be "off your shoulders", shouldn't it?
Typos:
appearace --> appearance
bralass --> bra-less
Punctuation:
at the back, it needs to be level --> at the back; it needs to be level
if it is even add four, if it is odd add five
-->
if it is even, add four; if it is odd, add five
your breasts, don't squish them --> your breasts; don't squish them
Well done!

Wow, exciting!
Um, yeah, in theory a bra should stay up if the straps are slipped down OFF of your shoulders.
Dear subeditory people, please do whatever you must with my grammar and punctuation (and typos/spelling mistakes) in order to make this article suitable for publication.
Thanks for all the input everyone!
