"But once past Corinth, you'll find the roads are slow, steep and windy,..."

Do you really mean windy, or do you mean winding? smiley - bigeyes

Great entry as ever, Gnomon.

I did spot something that read a little awkwardly, but then I couldn't find it again! smiley - yikes

Might be worth mentioning that Gythion was the harbour of ancient Sparta. Also, are you planning to link to laconian's entry on Ancient Sparta? It's not edited yet, but it has been picked, so probably will be edited before this is.

Wow, this'll be a real credit to the Guide when it's in, Gnomon smiley - smiley

I love the part in the Mycenae section that says "Built on a hill, this city is a fortress, with walls made from huge stones. The later Greeks could not understand how such large stones could be handled by men, so they concluded these walls had been built by giants called Cyclopes and called them 'cyclopean walls'."

Thanks for your comments, everyone. I've added that Gythion was the harbour of ancient Sparta.

I'll add a link to Laconian's entry on Sparta as soon as it is picked, which I suspect will be tomorrow (Monday).

This is a wonderful entry, Gnomon!

One thing I'm curious about is what Peloponnese actually looks like in Greek, not transliterated. Would you be able to include that?

I've added the name in Greek letters as requested by EMR. I've also corrected a few spelling mistakes.

I thought the Sparta entry had already been picked (not sure why) but you're quite right, it hasn't yet.

There is only one thing worse than being Gosho, and that is not being Gosho

Sorry, I thought this was going to be an entry about Steptoe and Son.

Peloponnese... polo ponies... poloponnese.

You had to be there I guess smiley - tongueout

Hi there
Thanks for a fascinating article on a beautiful part of the world.

It brought back some memories of my only visit to the area about fifteen years ago. I found it to be a beautiful place but it was marred for me by the amazing amount of litter that lined the roadsides even out of town. I hope that they have that sorted out by now.

Mycenae was cited by historian Michael Woods in his program ‘In search of the Trojan Wars’ as a possible site for the City of Troy. You say that there isn’t much left and I’m not surprised. On my only visit there tourists and their kids were climbing over the walls, kicking out lumps of stone and in one case two guys were prising a piece of a wall out for souvenirs. I thought that it was a disgraceful way to treat an ancient site that was a part of the Greek heritage. The same sort of thing was happening to Stonehenge a few years back, although it’s a bit more difficult to pocket a fifteen foot high Sarsen, and eventually access was limited to a trail around the outer ring. It is such a shame that some people cannot be trusted to treat such artefacts with even a modicum of respect.

Anyway, I’d like to draw your attention to the juxtaposition of the last two sentences of the first paragraph of the subsection titled ‘The Roman Empire.’ It may only be me and a warped sense of humour, but you may want to do a little rearrangement in that area.
>…and Corinth became the biggest city in all of what is now Greece, with the most renowned brothels… St Paul spent nine months there trying to spread his message, without any noticeable success.< smiley - smiley

Thanks for a good read. All the best

Oh, by the way,
In the paragraph 'The Mycenaeans' you refer to Mycenae as a town and later in the paragraph for Mycenae as an ancient city. Can it be both?

Thanks, Deke. I don't think there is really distinction between a town and a city in ancient history. Some of the ancient cities were really rather small. I suppose I should call it a city throughout.

It's not just your warped sense of humour - that juxtaposition was deliberate.smiley - winkeye

I've changed around some of my cities and towns so that Mycenae and Mystras are now consistently referred to as cities while Tiryns is a town throughout the entry.
