Damn those possessive apostrophes, I thought I had fixed all those!

This whole ie/i.e. thing is confusing me. I had 'i.e.' in an entry last week and was told to change it to 'ie'. I have 'ie' in an entry this week and I'm told to change it to 'i.e.'.

No. It definitely should be ie rather than i.e. It's h2g2 House Style:

Abbreviation points can be distracting and make the page dotty, so it's best not to overuse them even if (strictly) they should be there. Hence we use USA not U.S.A., ie not i.e., etc not etc. (though if etc is at the end of a sentence, we obviously add a full stop).

I watched 'Wings', it was set in an airport; it wasn't that great, but it stayed on a long time because it was on between two shows that were, and Americans are to lazy to change the channels, even when they don't have to get up (I should know!). The best thing about the show was the cab driver, played by Tony Shaloub.

I don't think Jane Leeves was trying to do any sort of accent; she sounded exactly the same on "Frazier" as she did in "Throb", a short-lived series set in a record company. IMDb says she's from Ilford, Essex (as is Maggie Smith!)

Did Fraiser just cameo in Wings? I've never heard of it. At least not as a programme.

Yes, it was a cameo. The airline on 'Wings' was a small comuter line that flew to Boston, so Frasier did indeed show up on one episode, as did other characters on the same network (NBC).

I don't think we'll ever see a 'Wings' DVD set come out; it wasn't very good.

I will give it a really good read in the light of day but a few things now.

First, before I forget the DVD set of the first season gives an excellent precis of the shows birth.

Daphnes voice: It isn't too bad an accent. John Mahoney is actually from Manchester originally and help Jane Leeves with the accent. He still has problem saying some words without dropping into an English accent - soemtime sthey have to change the dialogue if he cannot get it just right.

The show, for me, is very British which is such a surprise given that it has ran so long in America. The sarcasm, puns, irony and farce are all very British. Ray Cooney would be proud of some of the episodes especially some of the classic "Run for your wife" style episodes. There was one in a ski lodge where various people had to be kept apart as they did not know each other was there. The manic running through doors was perfect farce.

Two quick things; one, when you describe Daphne, it may bear mentioning that she eventually marries Niles and begins calling him by his first name, and I believe she started calling his brother Frasier and their father Martin.

Two, the theme song does mean something about his on-air radio show. Tossed salad and scrambled eggs are terms for the 'confused', and the callin' refers to the callers-in.
