The suggestion that European industry respects family life is, in my view, only possibly true if you don't regard Britain as being part of Europe. Speaking from bitter experience, employers in the UK can be as ruthless as anyone could ever be in persecuting employees who want to have a job AND a life. Things are improving a little now in that regard, but only because of the British government being obliged by international agreements to respect European Community regulations.
