Like any big Irish town, Cork has numerous pubs. There is a bowling alley, a nice park down by the Lee, the University is worth a look-in, as is Finnbars Cathedral. The Crawford art gallery is definitely worth going to. Its the City of Culture this year, so it's quite likely that there will be some musical or artistic activities going on during the day. I will check over the next few days.

There is also the option of travelling outside the city a little bit, heading down to Kinsale, and taking the coastal route in the direction of Clonakilty.

I will think more about this when I get back home.

I was planning on arriving by train, so I will require a lift if we are heading out of the city.

One possibility is a trip to Cobh. You can get there by train, the journey is quite pleasent, and you can visit the Heritage Centre there. Cobh was a major stopping-off point for emigrants heading to the US in the last 2 centuries. The Titanic stopped there before its rendezvous with the iceberg.

Another thing I've just thought of - the train to Cobh stops off at Fota Island. There is a wildlife park here (cheetahs, monkeys, lemurs, buffalos, giraffes and for some strange reason, tons of South American rodents) but it also features an interesting period house and arboretum. The wildlife park is a bit pricey, but the arboretum is free. It's a very pleasant place to visit, particularly during the spring.

I'm not sure that a rail trip out of Cork is a good idea, considering we'll have just arrived on a long rail trip from Dublin in the morning. We might prefer to just wander around the city.

smiley - ok - just some options. If I think of more I will let you know.

Ah - another one is the old Cork gaol - it's in Sundays Well, which is a very interesting walk in its own right. You get some excellent views of the city and the university as you are walking there. Not sure what is in the gaol myself as I have never been there, but I hear it's worth a visit.

Here is the current list of activities around that date which are part of the City of Culture :

Cork Opera house (Half-Moon theatre) are planning to have Vinicius Cantuaria perform that night. (About 20 euro <deep intake of breath&gtsmiley - winkeye

Tommy Tiernan is in the Everyman Palace (25 euro) - again it's late.

Seems as if the Triskel Arts Centre have not published their programme yet.

UCC's programme is a bit sparse at the moment also, however the new Glucksman Gallery would definitely be worth a visit. It's by far the strangest building in Cork. I'm leaving this link here just in case there are changes. http://cork2005.ucc.ie/apr.htm
