Hi Joe,

This is a really excellent entry. I know KL quite well, as I have visited it quite a lot in recent times through work. You have painted a very comprehensive picture of the town. It's a quiet town for its size but the local people are very friendly.

One little tidbit which I learned recently was that the "lynn" in Kings Lynn is old celtic word for "pool". In Ireland, the "lin" in the city of Dublin has exactly the same origins. Dublin = Black Pool.

I would wholeheartedly agree with you regarding the roundabout. What a job. Isn't it spelt "Hardwick"?

Is the correct spelling "Wagn" railway, or Wagon railway?

Sandringham is down the road a bit - doesn't Princess Diana have some connection with the town? Went to school there or something?

Anyway - it's good stuff. You shouldn't have a problem getting this into the Edited Guide.

Just two tiny things, both in the first paragraph - should 'southeast' be 'south-east'? And I think you need a footnote to explain to any foreign types (i.e. us westcountry folk) what 'borough status' means practically.

Apart from that, a blinder!

But Wagn is correct, not Wagon - it stands for West Anglia Great Northern.

I'm not sure about Sandringham, but Diana's primary school was on Gayton Road in Gaywood. It was in the local press quite a bit recently because it closed down for Christmas and never re-opened due to lack of funds; and I think it was the only private school left in Lynn. There was talk of the parents getting together to re-open it with a board of governers, but I haven't heard anything more since. Worth a mention, do you think?

On the southeast/south-east point: it seems that there isn't a definitive answer on this. There doesn't seem to be an answer on the Sub-editors' Style page, and I've asked various people and received all sorts of answers. Typing 'south-east' into Microsoft Word results in it being flagged up as a grammar mistake, and it suggests 'southeast'; but correcting it to the latter results in it being flagged up as a spelling mistake, and it suggests 'south-east'!

And I'll see if I can put something together about Boroughs

Um.

I've written 'A borough is an administrative district, encompassing various Town and Parish Councils, and itself encompassed by the County Council.' But that doesn't seem to really explain it properly... And where do District Councils fit into it all?

Sorry, you can see that local government isn't my strong point!

I think after you say..."southeast of The Wash"..or whatever it is you should probably say, "in Norfolk". I know it says Norfolk in the title of it could make confusion and thought that Lynn is in the southeast of England...which would be odd.

I shall return with the giant Peer Review notepad at some point to prod this properly.
