Excellent article. I wish I had it in my elementary school...
One note: In fights, the authorities usually blame the person who hit last. My solution for my troubles in elementary school was, in a heavily populated class, to wait for the teacher to turn his/her attention away from me, at which point I would strike the bully first. When the bully struck back, the class would get in an uproar, and the teacher would turn back to see the bully hitting me. Every time, the bully would get suspended, and I get off scott free. That tactic was very useful in my survival.

You must have been blessed with remarkably dim bullies. Most bullies I have met have enough tactical sense to wait until recess and then avenge themselves upon you. If you have hit first, their revenge would be completely uninhibited.

Bullies, by definition, are dim. My school was blessed with 30 paranoid teachers who obviously had a pampered, "boy-in-bubble" lifestyles, who would always punish the one they first saw attacking. So, I could essentially go about my own way, as long as I only called attention to myself on the defense. I learned quickly who got in trouble when the bully punched first, so I punched first. They never learned that particular observation.

well, when the national motto is "assimilate or die", you do what you need to do to survive...
This was only my third year at the school. The first two dealt mainly in my getting beat up for being different than they...
I think I some it up best somewhere.... over... here:
