Does that mean we can disagree to agree?

Oops!

I feel compelled to clarify what I meant about belittling someone's faith. For the record, I'm an atheist and the ability of anyone to have faith in something unseen just plain puzzles me. But that's ME. Actually, when I posted that, I was just thinking about all these years that my exceedingly Lutheran mother has been praying for me....not for my soul, but for my life to go the way I want it to and for me to be happy. It finally hit me a couple of years ago that that's her own admittedly weird way of showing that she loves me. And it certainly hasn't ever hurt me in any way. As for the snooty god-calls-me-for-decorating-tips types, well, I find them easy to ignore. Also, to laugh at.

As for the religion-starting-wars things, I stand corrected. Nonetheless, most major and many minor wars have involved religion and/or freedom thereof. Hitler disrespected (feared?) Judaism, so he persecuted the Jews. (Among others, yes, I know.) And what about the crap in Ireland? Ugh. I don't want to get into it.

Anyway, I didn't mean to start a religion thread, and am currently engaged in self-flagellation using long strands of freshly plucked sea urchins as punishment.

And Krissy, thanks for the nice Iron Chef post! smiley - smiley

And I'm probably going to go to some less religion-oriented fora now...

FWIW, the war in Ireland has as much relevance to religion as a cold shower...

(warning: possible urban myth follows).
Some guy was walking down the street in Northern Ireland, when some people come up to him (optionally dressed in black, and ask him what religion he is.
"Atheist" he replies. (or he may say "Muslim")
"Fine", they say, "but are you protestant atheist or catholic atheist?"

I do wonder if you might claim the cold war as one for our boys - I don't think the state atheism of Stalin affected USSR foreign policy to any extent, but I could be wrong. Aside from that, the odd high school massacre is as far as atheism has got to. Clearly the problem is that we haven't been trying for long enough - in a few millenia you can expect to see certain religions starting to be banned as inciting "bad" behaviour. Long before then, they'll lose their charitable status and suchlike. I'm not particularly happy about it, but I suspect it's inevitable. smiley - sadface

OK, Dice, I stand corrected....again. Score one for American ignorance of foreign affairs!

Gotta disagree with you on a couple of points, though. For one thing, when people insinuate that we're a collective of some sort, it kind of gives me the creeps; makes us sound like a bunch of cultists.

As for our not trying hard enough, well, hell, we don't really need to! The more of life's mysteries science unravels, the less need people in general will have for religion. And if we all raise our offspring as good little atheists, then we'll just keep spreading.

And *please* don't lump us with those brats who shot up their high school. For one thing, I'm sick of hearing about it. For another, their brand of atheism seems to be the teen-rebellion type; that is, they wanted to look cool, piss off their parents, and maybe, just maybe, frighten a few people. They had no respect for life and they hurt a *lot* of people. Teen rebellion nihilism does not an atheist make!

Loved the little anecdote, though. smiley - smiley

Oops, sorry, I had another window open and meant that for another forum.

Locutus: "I am Locutus, of Borg. Resistance is futile. Your life as it has been is over. From this time forward, you will service ... us."

Riker: "Mr. Worf, fire."

[The blast does absolutely no damage to the Borg ship]

Riker: "D'OH!"

SO tell me Locutus what is it you like about being a borg.

Oh you know, the mindless tedium, stamping around, oh and the shouting "RESITANCE IS FUTILE"
oh and the hours are good...mind you most of the actual minutes are pretty lousy

which reminds me I've been thinking of having my cube redecorated, what do you think of yellow?
