Before the new h2g2 I had all my links in dropdown-boxes like the ACE-list but now I can't make them work at all anymore... (all I got was the XML error no matter what I did...) Is there a way to put the links to boxes now or do I have to find another solution...??

You can find updated code for:
- ACEs pulldown here http://www.h2g2.com/A357077
- a more generic (with ACEs style options) pulldown http://www.h2g2.com/A358210
- a generic pulldown here http://www.h2g2.com/A214066
- the random user code http://www.h2g2.com/A178472 (I think I saw this on your page a while ago)
hope it helps

Please visit http://www.h2g2.com/A362594 for new ACE list code. Sorry about this. I didn't know you had a copy of the code and I am changing the URL. *sighs*

'sOkay, the .js file updated the page anyway with info about the new code page - so I'll leave it as it is & then anyone who finds a link I've dropped in a forum will get sent to the latest version.
I only had it there because a couple of people had trouble with the empty SCRIPT tag when the new version of h2g2 went live
Nice trick with the old version of the .js file btw - though that type of thing is quite a good argument for banning javascript on h2g2 - who knows what nasties might be lurking in an offsite js file
have fun

In a sense it is. But I'm not doing anything nasty. It's not as all those who had the old script would suddenly have that on their pages. I wanted to move the file to it's new location for a while. When I found out that Ripley destroys the old script, I thought I could take advantage of the update by changing the URL at the same time. So I told E.Vibenstein to update his code. He did, but your code was not updated. Then, I noticed E.V's code was also faulty (missing out a "). I'm preparing to develop several scripts into gadgets. So I was fixing up the new ACE list code and thought that I might as well add this update as well. Now, with the old address, I could have just deleted the script giving an empty list. But instead I thought I'd inform the person of the wrong code and help them fix it.
So I don't think its a reason to ban javascript, it's not like I can do anything nastier than I could do onsite. I admit it is taking advantage of the offline code, but as it was not meant to be visable to users (who were supposed to go straight to the new code), I think it is fair .

I wasn't complaining about your code or suggesting there was anything wrong with it.
"it's not like I can do anything nastier than I could do onsite" - yes you could (I think) - some javascript is stripped out by the parser as being too unsafe - I'm pretty sure an external js file would bypass it.
No more details btw - it'd be a bit like posting a bomb recipe - you never know who might read it.

Yes. No bomb recipe for me . But I still disagree. Currently the parser doesn't seem to block javascript at all (well, I haven't tried that much) but it seems to ignore script. So the fundamental problem is limiting javascript or replacing it with gadgets. I'm in favour of either, as long as I get to keep my scripts .

btw the "Visit ACE in" list on your homepage is showning as a 1 character wide empty list in IE5.1 on Win98

Must have been a server going down. And by the way, eventually I will be removing the old ACElist js file eventually so that page of yours won't work.

Bruce Posted Jun 15, 2000
That's OK - by then anyone who finds a link I've left in a forum can't expect the page to not have been recycled
BTW Just a bit of 'spamming' for an unofficial discussion page on GuideML Gadgets I've started here http://www.h2g2.com/A299504
All contributions welcome.

All I get is the code, anyway.. I have to backspace to the page to see it.. and then it's normally sans java cuteness. Sometimes being behind is a good thing(tm)...
