Hi Sho,
If your problem with the netbook is what I think it is, its pretty easy to fix if you main pc is connected to your router.
I had the exact same problem with my new acer netbook.
If you need any more details email me direct at rferrett(at)swryc(dot)org(dot)uk

you are lovely - I have to try to install the router tomorrow (again) because that - as a separate problem - just won't play ball.
So thanks for the offer

Thank you
I'm going to try installing the router again. But ... it's all that "disable VPN clients, virus filter, firewall..." I haven't a clue how to do half of those things - as well as issues with doing it while being online...
Anyway, I'm going to make sure I have either valerian or gin to hand when I do it!

So do you have a PC that is connected to the web through the router (presumably the one oyu are posting on)?
If you have/can get team viewer http://www.teamviewer.com/index.aspx I could have a look at your settings for you and see if it is something simple.

It's a Netgear WNB2100
I have tried to mail their support - but it doesn't even appear in their product list. When I googled the error message I found that just about everyone and his uncle has this problem and have been directed here

to solve it
In 6 years when I've completed my IT type degree I might even understand what the they're on about.
Apparently for DSL you need to use "bridge" mode. Since no information about any of this carp is in the box I'm going to the shop where I bought it and I'm going to make a huge fuss. When I got it - I said to the guy I have Zero knowledge about how the internet works beyond elves and fairy dust. With that in mind he sold me this heap of junk (not junk, but not a consumer product by my definition of the words)
Sorry to rant - this type of thing makes me really really

Ahhh... wireless "n" funky new technology and that. First thing, your netbook almost certainly won't have a wireless n card as standard. Unless it is a really expensive top of the range one.
The router might still be able to transmit in b and g though.....
With these sort of routers they normally should be pretty much "plug and play" if you have a DSL connection.
When plug oyur pc into the router, can oyu access the router home page by typing 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 into a browser?

Oh gawd love you. I have no idea what you're talking about!
Seems the netbook should be ok (according to the geezer in the shop - I'll be trying it in another McD tomorrow morning)
The wireless router has a fault on the CD (all installation CDs not just mine) and a very nice young fellow wrote me a mail and offered help.
We shall see...

what is that IP address?
should I know about stuff like that? (too late to try now - maybe over the course of this week I'll have a window of 5 minutes when I can give it all another go)

Blimey - how do you know all that stuff?
Anyway, thank you for your help. I got a lovely mail from some chappie at NetGear and have now got the thing up and running.
But I really appreciate your offer of help. I just lurve h2g2!
