And if you just turn the sound off and set the mobile to vibrating?

Gnomon - time to move on

There's not much point in having a vibrating mobile if I can't answer it. Still, we're probably allowed use mobiles in the central Great Court.

There's something called 'SMS', Gnomon. Should be sufficient to let the respective other know which location everybody is. smiley - winkeye

I'm just overly sensitive. Last time I tried to use a mobile phone in the British Museum a curator came and told me to stop within about 30 seconds. These guys have nothing better to do.

What is h2g2 in semaphore?

Distracting, if you're in a museum! i reckon it's gotta be worth a try, cos if you point out by example the loophole (bet they dont have 'no semaphore' in the rule book!) then a request to be allowed to send an unobtrusive text message might be allowed...

Gnomon - time to move on

I believe that the semaphore for h2g2 is done by making the two flags look like the following clock times:

7:45 12:10 5:45 3:00 6:20 12:10 5:45

The reason for there being so many characters is that the same symbols serve both as alphabetic and numeric characters, so a "shift into numeric" and a "revert to alphabetic" are needed.

I could be wrong, though, as websites are not very explanatory on this matter.

Is that from the semaphoree or semaphorer's POV?

As the venue has been decided, and believing in the Democratic process...

What time would people like to meet?

I haven't smiley - thief the joint yet, so I'm uncertain where anywhere is, like cafe or restaurant and, as I've only ever wandered in and out of the Egyptian room, I would like to extend my perambulations a little further...

So would you prefer:

12.00
12.30
13.00
13.30
14.00

And would people prefer to grab a bite before heading for The Shakespeare's Head or eat when you get there?

Off to do some e-mailing... back later.

Well, since British Museum is huge, and you get hungry just of walking around there, I guess 13.00 to 14.00 would be a good time to meet.

14.00 is good for me. I prefer to eat at Shakespeare's, the meal was good in Oct.

I'll fit in with whatever time other people want. If the grub is good at Shakespeare's and they can cope with us all at once, then it gets my vote. smiley - towel

13:30 with a view to setting off about the place at 14:00?

Gnomon - time to move on

The Museum is a square around the central Great Court, which is roofed over with the most amazing roof in the world (Norman Foster). The court is the place where you'll all meet, but even then it might be advisable to meet at a particular place within the court.

Since I won't be there until 15:00, there's no point in me voting on when you'll all meetup. I'd recommend 13:30, to start wandering at 14:00, though.

What do people want to look at? How many of you have been there before?

I'd seriously recommend not eating in the Museum but at the Shakespeare's Head, as the museum food is expensive.

I recommend everybody should meet in the southwest corner of the Great Court at 13:30. Walk in the main doors from Great Russell Street, straight through into the court, then turn left and go stand in the corner.

Gnomon, I shall accept your knowledge of the British Museum, as mine is less than scant... although I will be visiting in a fortnight's time, as I always do with all venues, just to update on any chasnges, and underground disruptions, and thanks for the information... And for those who might have missed it there is also this the day before: http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/brunel/F19585?thread=5301554&show=20&skip=0#pi2 MMF o/~

With only three votes (I think) in I'll work on 14:00 start.

I'll aim to be at the 'Gallery' Cafe, NOT the Court cafe, (as there are two) for 13:30 to head off for a wander around 14:00.

Getting there?

Hope that helps, folks.

Anyone who hasn't got my mobile number, then e-mail me as per the address on my PS and I'll send it to you...

See you all in 11 days.
