This is from the depths of the unedited Guide. It is a bit unconventional, but I believe it to be in the original Guide spirit. The author seems to have left, but his legacy remains...

His Strider!
Congratulations on being made a scout, BTW.
I see what you mean, however I am left wanting more. As the entry was first posted two years ago, almost, are we certain the bar's still there, with the staff mentioned? Which is the nearest Metro station?
It will be interesting to see what others think.

Finding the nearest Metro to Rue de Canettes can't be hard, but I agree it would help if it could be established if the place was still there.

Thanks Zarquon's Singing Fish! (Seems like ages ago I asked you how to make smileys! )
I agree with the need to verify that this place still exists. I'm kind of far away though.... Anybody live around there? I think I'll post the question in askh2g2.

Ok, I did a search in the French yellow pages, unfortunately the only businesses that are registered at that address are:
Hôtel des Canettes - which may or may not have a bar, but to be honest, I can't see one (French Yellow Pages on the web even give you a photo of the building)
and
Artisnat de Luxe - which looks like an arts and crafts shop, there's nothing else in the Yellow Pages at that address.
Ok, I did a search on the whole street, there's no bar of that name (there are several other bars within 100 yard radius, but nothing with that - or a similar - name...
Sorry folks looks like this one is out of date now.

This is an interesting point, I think. I once suggested that it would be good to add some pubs, restaurants etc to an otherwise pretty comprehensive guide to Sheffield, I think it was.
Someone pointed out the danger of such 'good food 'n' booze' guides on h2g2: they go out of date.
On the other hand I have also seen elsewhere comments from DNA along the lines of "a researcher could be enjoying pancakes with some particularly fine maple syrup; open up their laptop and jot down a brief write-up of a memorable breakfast; and Bob's yer proverbial! It's right there in blue and white (peacock blue and orange, in some cases!) for all other h2g2 researchers to see.
And indeed, there must be quite a bit of o-o-d info already in the edited guide by now.
One possible solution, though I'm not too sure what the value is, could be to slightly adapt the piece to make it:
"There was once a terrific bar in the rue de machin in the Xth arrondissement of Paris called 'La Cave StGermain'. This entry is a tribute to the memory of a bar so amazing, unique and adored by the public that it really should never be forgotten. The soul of that particular party is now immortal thanks to the h2g2! There's another good deed for posterity.
So, about this bar, blah, blah, blah"
Well, it's just a thought.

This is the basis of a really neat little bar entry that's entirely suitable for the Guide. However, the one problem we have is that we can't tell if the bar is still extant. I suggest you move this thread to the Writing Workshop and ask the Community to investigate further. I'll keep my eye on it, too. (I did a search for the Cave on Google but only got the hotel with no reference to the bar of this entry.)
Sam.

Well, it seems the bar no longer exists...
Sam, would it be acceptable to alter this entry to say "This little bar once existed here and was as such" as a tribute entry? If not, I'll just take it out (and won't feel badly).

Hi there Strider,
Well, tricky one this! In theory, a retrospective about a bar that once existed could easily be an Edited Guide Entry. But in this particular case, the entry is so short that it really doesn't amount to much considering that the best bit about it (the fact that you can go and actually visit it ; that it exists) no longer applies. If you are 100% sure that it has indeed disappeared then I'd probably take it out.
Thanks very much for keeping me informed on this one.
