Didn't these become mainstream in the 90's?
What started in the late 80's as underground in '88, the Summer of Love, and '89, the outdoor rave scene, finally went corporation big.
The super club empires of the Ministry of Sound and Cream went from seeds to big bloated fruit. The price of drugs went down and consumption went up.
DJ's were bigger than rock bands and everybody bemoaned the loss of real guitar music.
Or was it just me noticing that?
