I sign everytime I'm asked that question.
'I'm a doctor, and er a PhD student, and yes, I'm already a doctor, well there's more reason to do a PhD than to call yourself doctor. No, I have no idea what that rash might be, I'm sorry that the doctor you saw two years ago wasn't nice to you, was it me? No? Well I really can't do anything about that.'

The curse of having A Profession: everyone thinks you can help them for free outside work!

I don't mind generally.
I very strongly identify with my profession, and I think that you have a duty to help people out of work if you can. I've lost track of the number of times a 20 minute phone call has made a huge difference to someone who is anxious about a new diagnosis etc. You don't ever stop being a doctor.

No one has ever asked me to do anything I've done for work outside work.
Unless you count being asked to do the barbecue (I spent a year at Uni having a part time job in a fast food restaurant).

Well, I'm officially A Programmer: I was up more than an hour and a half later than I usually go to bed (3-4 AM local time, to be fair), trying to fix a single bug which turned out to be the result of a slight burst of stupidity. Oh, and this was just programming more or less for pleasure. And then I couldn't actually get to sleep for another hour or so ...
I made a point of riding my bike earlier, though, and not just because I had to get groceries. It's a nice day, notwithstanding the rather irritable-looking clouds that were on the horizon. But now I feel like I never want to move again!

I am right now! I'm scanning and printing some photos as a favor to the estate of my late elderly friend.
Yar, there's hardly any better feeling than fixing a particularly weird bug. The only thing better is when the code runs first time. But that can be boring and it puts you off your guard.

i did it. Tomorrow's job is to read through them all checking the spelling and grammar, ans well as the content, and then hand them in.

Oh, I know! Tonight, I've had just the most *delightful* bugs programming my game this evening, mostly because there hadn't been enough basic functionality for me to test it until now.
Like when I started it up and it wasn't displaying properly, that was a great-big- moment. And then the test-background-music played once and then stopped, because I'd forgotten to set the background-music system to make it loop, thus causing me to also with my other hand as well!
I've still got a lot of bugs to look forward to tomorrow, as well!!

I'm a software developer too, when I'm at work. I'm finding it horrible and stressful now tht we hve been told that our next review depends on there being no bugs found in our code during integrtion, system, user acceptance, and end to end testing. Apparently we're doing all this testing for no reason as we're all producing perfect code every time despite the tight deadlines and not really being given enough time for code and unit test. I hate my job now, used to enjoy it when it was the challenge of developing a solution, but being threatened with redundancy when a single bug is found in systest is a bit much

Me neither, but when people know I've got a couple of degrees in maths, they sometimes ask me to add nubers together. As if mathematicians are any good at counting.

My work is to try to repair anything that makes a sound, conveys a sound over 10 feet or 10,000 miles. I have done a lot of stuff after-hours but it's just what I do.

That's funny. When people find out I have a couple degrees in math, they think I must be a software developer and are shocked absolutely shocked when I say, "Well, I learned a little programming on the side, along the way, mostly self-taught."
