Z, you're a little bit our with your stats there. If the death toll is still 37, then that represents just over 4 day's worth based upon last years total UK road death total of 3,221. (We're not doing as well by all accounts so far this year.)
And just for the sake of comparison. The death toll resulting from the September 11th attacks represented about 25 days worth of US traffic accident deaths for 2001.

I was until I read news that the progress G8 are hoping to make on climate change looks to be minimal. Shrub has not budged much. If anything it is a backward step as those signed up to higher ideals will be allowed to slide. I don't want this to be lost in the horror of yesterday's but I think Shrub may be looking at it as a good day to bury bad news on the climate.

He would have buried news on the climate regardless. The scientific reports that he receives on the subject have been deliberately doctored to confirm with the point of view that he wants to hear.

Just as long as Shrub gets to play with his guns and toy soldiers he's happy... We shall extermify the terrorizationist threatification.

This will probably simulpost with others because I've been sitting here for so long, thinking, but I still have nothing to say. I don't want to overwhelm the salon with partisan politics.
I've been in a few other threads today, though, and seen a lot of researchers who used to be salonistas for a while but don't come here any more.

Why would Bush care all that much about clean energy when he has Alan Greenspan whispering in his ear that as long as Americans will pay through their noses for gas that there's no need to?

I agree Lil, we do have our political threads for that kind of discussion.

I have good news. Molly came home. She is fat and sassy, so I suspect she has been sneaking in at night to eat anyway. She cuddled and purred then disappeared again. She and Minerva really hate each other.

Oh. The repairman is changing out my furnace today, but doesn't think he can get the AC delivered until Monday. So it will be another hot weekend for me.

Are you sure it wasn't politics but the occasional mention of *down there* that have driven researchers away?
Last night was our company picnic. The caterer brought pulled-pork barbeque sandwiches, chicken and veggie shish-kabobs, crackers and salmon spread, various summer salads (fruit, potato, greens), cakes, cookies, beer, wine and soda pop. The chicken on the shish-kabobs was still raw. I hope someone will be getting our money back on that item. The rest was pretty good. And we had fairly fun games--the kind of silly stuff otherwise stuffy adults do at company picnics. I went home and a PL that has been creeping back into my life came over and...
ahem.
Anywho, I woke up bright and early and ate a great big breakfast. All that physical activity gave me a huge appetite.
I liked some of the works of your artist, Witty. The images of Mardi Gras, Hollywood "sheik" films of the 1920s, and turn-of-the-last-century seaside follies. However, I suspect that's because I was responding to those subjects I already have an interest in, rather than the quality of the art itself. It's touching on a subject we've discussed before at length, but just because you or Hypatia are not familiar with an artist, artistic movements, or have a college degree in art appreciation, doesn't mean you're not competent to judge whether or not you feel an artist is good. It's all subjective.

I have been shopping today. I meant to go shopping yesterday, but hey-ho, anyway. I went a wee bit mad in the sales and bought £100-worth of yummy scrummy yarn for £40 (hurrah!) - somewhat less calorific comfort-shopping than chocolate and pastry. I was also looking for smart outfits for S and me - we have a wedding to go to soon, and boy are we scruffy. Nada. Not satisfactory. And when I got to the blood donor's centre they were so full of donors that I was asked to come back next week. I trundled home again, feeling slightly unloved but like a good citizen who has been doing her best to a) not be cowed and b) be helpful. Alas the itchy throat I thought was down to slight dehydration has decided to get really grumpy and hurt in a 'you can't swallow your tea because of huge lump of thorns' sort of way. So probably just as well they didn't have room for my nasty germy blood.
I can't talk about politics without biting through furniture in sheer frustration at the moment.
I am very well aware that I have no profound or interesting things to say today, but am suffering from strong urge just to stay in touch with people and not be sat here on my own moping. Mope mope.
I am the one in the corner eating ice-cream 'for medicinal purposes' and fiddling with bright purple wool - whaddaya think? Jumper for my Mum?

I don't think politics makes salonistas drop out.
Well, that's not true. I believe the political flavor of the salon to be overwhelmingly progressive, and that we HAVE driven away conservatives. Not because we hate them or want them to go away but because they haven't chosen to remain and discuss the issues.
I don't think it's the sex, either.
Nor does the accusation of clique-ishness hold water, because we do have recent joiners who stay and contribute and fight the backlog.
*goes to the samovar for another cup of tea* I guess it's just something I worry about from time to time.
