I've read The Moon is a Harsh Mistress a gazillion times, and this is the first time I've noticed that tanstaafl was an acronym for the definition I'd been using (Maybe perusing Brit Eng's backlog has something to do with it...)
The watching-to-learn-to-drive-a-stick thingy is a great idea! I'll give it a try. Though I didn't have too hard a time helping Tom jumpstart the car using the truck (also a stick) and then moving the truck forward a couple feet so it could be parked correctly, once I realized that I had to push the clutch in to get it into first

Thanks guys.
One more result to wait for before I know what I got in my degree.
I need to get 56% to have a 2:1.

I'm glad they could fix the car, FG. Which brings up the old saying that all's well that ends well. Not sure I go along with that. Things ending well is a good thing, but I don't know how having a load of stress arriving at that point is always helpful.
Lady C taught me how to drive a stick shift about a million years ago. On country roads in the middle of Kansas where the liklihood of me meeting another car was slim. I remember we laughed quite a lot, but I got the hang of it.
Today is registration day for summer reading. I have to run. since it's my day off, I'll run in the cookies and supervise setting up the tables then take off.

Crosses fingers for Miss Nicky. I may have to uncross them long enough to load the car.

>I learned to drive that stick without *ever* doing the herky-jerky.
Oh, like a car tanked up on kangaroo gas?
with the car and the saloon experience, FG. Must admit that I didn't quite catch the Tanstaafl one...
Amy,
Had a slightly too moment the other day. With some local friends we were going to a theatre show in the middle of the Tivoli gardens. The tickets conveniently includes the entry to Tivoli, so we came a bit early and walked around, enjoying the beautiful gardens though neither rides nor bars...
In front of the concert hall that hosted the show, there are lots and lots of roses in bloom. We looked and pointed and stuck our noses into one after the other too see if they were also of the older varieties that also have the lovely smell of roses.
Until suddenly I froze in the middle of the path and looked at the guy from the other couple. "What are we doing ?? Previously, when we came here it was for the rides and the and to look at all the young girls. And now we're sniffing the roses...???"
I guess we all get older.
We only cast some sideways glances at the roses after that

I would like to cast a vote for my favorite pub--O'Malley's Irish Pub in Weston, Missouri. It's lodged in an old lager cellar 55 feet underground. The loos are on ground level. You must go up three flights of steps and a ramp to reach them--rather tricky for a with bad knees. By the end of the evening, I didn't mind the climb at all.
They have live music four nights a week and on Saturday and Sunday afternoons--all the musicians sing Celtic music. Love it!!!

Just before I left for work, Birdie the Bunyip brought in a large mouse, and dropped it at Thumbelina's feet. She has adopted Thumbelina, so this was some sort of learn-to-hunt assignment, I guess. Birdie has since gone to bed for the day, leaving Thumbs and her brother Squeaky Joe guarding both ends of the sideboard, behind which the mouse had run as soon as Birdie let it go. It was completely unscathed; Birdie even brought in a mouthful of twigs and grass along with the rodent.
I came home wondering if there would be entrails spread across the carpet, but no. Thumbelina arose from her watchpost and came over to greet me. The mouse emerged from behind the sideboard and ran into the kitchen area. Thumbelina turned and caught it, but just batted about, and it then scampered, squealing, under the stove. Joe is in it for the long haul. He is hunkered down in the kitchen, musing on the stove.

I don't remember if I mentioned this when it happened or not. a few weeks back I was sitting in my recliner with my fet up, minding my own business, when Minerva came in through the cat flap with a mouse in her mouth. She jumped up onto the reliner and dropped the mouse in my lap. I was not amused.
Okay, I have an annoncement to make. Henceforth and forever I will NOT loan anyone my books. I am heartily sick of having holes in my series from people never bringing them back. I just checked my Terry Pratchetts and 5 of them are gone again. I have purchased the entire set at least 3 times. My mother took most of my Tony Hillermans and gave them away. Ditto the Martha Grimes and P.D. James. Various book club members have raided this and that. I just had to replace nearly all of my Ian Rankins. I'm sick of it. I can't afford to keep buying the same books over and over.
If someone wants to read a book I have that isn't part of a series, and I don't care if I reread it - then I'll give it to them. But I will absolutely not loan books out of my favorite series. Especially not to my mother! She has more disposable cash than I have. She can buy her own books.
