actually, I take it back. It's probably 802,455,211,738 in decimal. Still a very large number.

I don't suppose catnip would help stop my cat mousing. She brought a live one in last night and it ran into a printer! We had ever so much fun getting it back out again. It's a tempting idea to keep her drugged.

Kaz, welome to the atelier! I see the others have made you comfortable, apart from the badgers, but I'll additionally point you to A304354 , our forum page, which in turn has an offsite link to the floorplan and some backstory.

I haven't raised a new topic because conversation threads normally run to about a thousand or twelve hundred posts. Recent aberrations were due to our being flooded, but we think that episode is behind us now. smiley - smiley

Anyway, as it gets close to the end of the thread the salonistas get restless and constantly go off-topic, and check their running shoes for the FTTF race (which won't be till the end of the week smiley - evilgrin). Marv, you can send me notes on Wednesday.

In addition to evening classes to prep for, this is local politics week, with te County Commissioners meeting tomorrow and our Preservation Board meeting Thursday night.

And there's trouble in Dodge. The two big landowners are circulating a petition to have the B district secede from the Ordinance. The real reason for this is that they want to make money off their overgrazed sections by selling out to developers, but they're going uner the umbrella of "property rights". smiley - grr

I don't like developers smiley - cross, except that a friend's husband is one, but at least he isn't part of the mob trying to foist 14 houses on us.

Honestly, I think "real estate developer" is becoming the new bad guy in many circles, from Hollywood movies to local elections. I know around here those are fightin' words said with a distinct tone akin to discussing a child molester.

Mrs Zen

Lil's comments about property prompt me to ask for opinions on a decision facing me. I have minimal pension provision, and like a lot of UKians I am using the high value of property to increase my net worth, in the hope that I will have enough capital when I retire to cover my ass.

I would love to live in one of the villages, but even the smallest cottages are a quarter of a mil sterling, which is way more than I can afford even with a mortgage. However there is a village locally with rather an odd history: it was built a hundred years ago on land which was bought communally. The deeds to the land were burned, and the houses on the land are therefore neither freehold nor leasehold. What you buy is the building, and the colony (ie community) grant you use of your patch of land. Because there are no deeds the building is un-mortgagable, and you have to pay cash. As a result the properties are very cheap, and I could probably get together enough cash to buy one. I would rent out my flat and use the rent to pay part of the mortgage on the flat, though I would have to subsidise the rest. But I would have no mortgage on the place where I lived. When I come to sell the property in the village it will not have had the capital gain that a similar property in another village would have had, but on the other hand I will have had the pleasure of living there.

So - should I do this, or should I stick to more traditional (and expensive and rewarding) forms of property? Pleasure now, or money later?

Ben

Ok I admit I may be slightly cynical.....

But the Quiz: Are you a cynic at
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/3492709.stm

tells me

Your results...

You're a top grade grade cynic - in fact you've turned cynicism into an art form. you greet almost every piece of news with sneering contempt.
Loosen up a bit.

Am I right to be just a bit cynical about the result? smiley - biggrin

I'm a second-rate cynic (makes me feel rather like I failed the test, actually).

The boys are off to the vet today to get snipped. I'm looking forward to an evening free of toe-biting and cat racing.

"loophole" or "liscence to print money" in both "leasehold freehold"
reform acts over last couple of years ,try doing a land resgistry search, with regard to this "village" this will aid your "descision makeing progrees"
