Caer, there's a few ideas for squirrels on the anglian gardener site I mentioned in #551. http://www.angliangardener.co.uk/green_up_your_fingers/unwanted_visitors_how_to_deter_foxes.htm I like the one that fires water at anything that passes the light beam.
(No comments on their thoughts about the difference between and English garden and an American one?)
Moonlight and I made it to the seaside. We went to Whistable, a place I took them to many times when small. It's changed quite a bit in the last few years from the sleepy seaside place. What's happened is that it's suddenly become quite trendy with Londoners since it's just over an hour by train. They've started to buy flats and apartments and the shops have started to cater for these visitors. I've heard that in the summer weekends it's very busy. Much like a pantomime dame that's had a facelift I suppose.
It's certainly pushed up the price of property and some of the beach houses are looking very smart, but I wonder whether locals can afford to live there anymore.
We walked along the beach and then sat on Peter Cushing's bench. http://www.oysta.fsnet.co.uk/cushing.htm

Hypatia, the powder you got in your book return was Calcium Carbide, which when mixed with water will produce Acetylene gas. The Acetylene gas is highly flammable, but I think it must have some ignition source rather than just bursting into flame. So the puns who poured Calcium Carbide into your book return must have also tossed in a match.
I used to use the substance as a noise maker using empty coffee tins. It was a lot of fun, but I rather doubt that I would get away with such a thing now.

MR - I seem to remember you having a similar problem not long after you moved from Montana?... I'm sure things will settle down.
I have grown thyme, parsley, chives, oregano and basil in pots on my windowsill indoors. I can never get coriander to work though, the leaves just go feathery. Anyone had any success with it?

I've always dreamed about the roof garden. Unfortunately it doesn't fit into the climate here.
MR, my son is 7 and he has sort of a period like this, too. The best I can do is to keep him busy with other things. He doesn't want to go out much and he hasn't friends around here, so it's legos and colouring books and such. And of course he could spend the days at the PC if I'd only let him. If I can't make the life better for him I can try to help him to let the out.

Here's an article about what's happened to Whitstable now that the DFL (Down From London) people have found it. http://observer.guardian.co.uk/magazine/story/0,11913,764429,00.html

Winter conditions in Utah haven't been like this in at least 5 years.
Killing the drought we have been in is a good thing but, I don't like going out in the conditions that kill droughts.

I haven't been to Whitstable since I was very small either. Herne Bay was the other place we used to go to from Chatham.
I haven't had a chance to look at the garden links, will do so later.
The forecasted snow didn't materialise here, just rain

Lil I have not got a clue about the 4 yikyers. Part of the intrigue of Tracky's posts is working out what the heck he's on about. More fun than any of the games and quizzes Salonistas occasionally suggest.
Upsets me that sort of stuff Lil. Tracky's Okay.

Well, so long as he doesn't mind me skipping his posts if they are too long and without carriage returns. I confess, I am with Lil on this one: clear communication is the responsibility of the transmitter, not the receiver.
The Stepson and I a lovely afternoon in Birmingham with A and Z, and arrived home safe and sound.

Brrr. It's very cold here tonight. -7 Celsius, 19 Fahrenheit. The heating in The Nest is only just coping and I'm mulling some wine to drive the cold from my extremities.

MR. I wish I had advice, but it sounds asa if everything was well covered already. Know that you have my support, though.
No snow here. In fact, its remarkably warm, really.
Good for you, Oetzi. Knicking trees would be a bit anti-social, I would think.

Is it possible to nick a Christmas tree after Christmas? Around here they start giving them away for free on Christmas Eve.
And am I understand that Z *wants* a leeky roof?

Would someone who knicked trees be a knicker?
