Hello, all.

Have any of you read the Hyperion series by Dan Simmons?

I found the first one (Hyperion) in paperback while on vacation about 8 years ago. I'd never heard of the author and I was just looking for something sci-fi to read at the beach.

It became quite an exercise. I almost had to take notes, but I did enjoy it. It has some interesting concepts, especially about communities. I could imagine the internet developing some interesting parallels with the Hegemony.

I have $10(us) certifacte for Media Play that bought me the Empire Records DVD for a total of $9. I love that movie, call me lowbrow and an avarage Merkin chump but I love that kind of flick. Plus it has a great soundtrack.

A great soundtrack can make a movie. I love The Big Chill, mostly for the music. It defined the lives of those characters.

Niven, and Niven/Pournelle did some great books, like Dream Park and The Integral Trees. And Footfall. Did they do The Fist of God as well?

I ought to be going out and doing a two-mile walk, but right now the air outside stinks of avgas and smog. There was some kind of evening show and a group of four prop planes kept flying low over the house. Don't know what they were exactly, but they had those variable prop engines that go BLAAAAAAATTT as they come toward you, and drown out the dialogue on the telly. And then the car traffic coming out of the show makes a deadly mess of the atmosphere... I wonder if we're under an inversion layer tonight?

Apart from the stealth bomber that made several passes the day before yesterday, there's been nothing interesting flying by. Kermit has left the B-24 in the garage.

Lil have you any photos from the various airshows? I am an airplane buff. I am glad that I no longer live near an airfeild however. I do like quiet.

Hello all, another day has broken and I've run out of sellotape (scotch tape, whatever). A beautiful morning here, but turning to showers later in the day, no doubt. Pity I thought I might get some gardening done.

Right breakfast, methinks.

Niven's ringworld. I read the first book years ago and have forgotten it now. I do remember though the ringworld idea is recognised as the practical version of a Dyson sphere.

The Ringworld is a fine example of a Big Dum MacGuffin and two entertaining books. I'm told number three ain't so good, but I haven't read it. Niven does do some good books, and I did like the idea of the Kzin (big cat guys) but I feel that was because I was fourteen at the time. The Tripods was another fine series, which is bound to look dated these days, just like everything else I watch smiley - winkeye
Hearing about your air show Lil, makes me glad England has the weather it has. I work in Farnborough (home of a large air show) and it is only the noise that bothers. The weather was not such as to cause all the fumes to hang about.

In my first job, I worked with a guy who lived in the normally quiet village of Fairford, Glos. Normally quiet until the airshow (Royal International Air Tattoo) when he'd normally pack up and go to the holiday home far away to get out of the way of the crowds. RAF Fairford was also the place they put B-52s and B-1s when they were over here.

Neither are scotch eggs.

Gday everybody.

I suspect airshows in general ain't what they used to be, ever since Ramstein. The one year Lakeland booked the Blue Angels (US Navy aerobatic jet team), though, all of south Lakeland came to a halt, as everyone in the area rushed outside to see those hot jets roar overhead. These latter days, more homes have been built in the immediate area around the airport, so flight paths have been altered.

Matina, I would ~love~ a hot cross bun, thank you.
