On Saturday 20 May 2000, David McKenzie won a stage of the Giro d'Italia, the second most important stage race in professional cycling. It may or may not be the first time a vegetarian has won a race of this importance (I haven't a clue, to be honest), but it's certainly the first win at this level for an all-vegetarian team.
The Linda McCartney team, sponsored by the people who make the vegetarian sausages, requires all its riders the become vegetarian. Most of them were highly sceptical when first signed up, but they all seem to rave about the health benefits now. The Italian press has been making quite a fuss, the main theme seeming to be surprise that vegetarians can survive in what's reckoned to be one of the most physically demanding sports going.

And before anyone asks (or runs screaming from the room) no, they don't eat fish.
