I did pause by the First Gold tonight, Bob, but I had a bit of a cider fetish going on

McEwan's Champion:
Wow, does this taste strong. A solid, heavy beer, beautifully brewed and surprisingly sweet. It's blended superbly, and the result is a fine, smooth and powerful ale. Just about the best of tonight's bunch, I reckon

Lainey has just been watching a clips shop, and one of them was of Gordon the Gopher meeting a rather amorous dog. Marvellous:

and this rather hilarious clip of a man being interviewed in front of an excitable kangaroo:

Badger First Gold
A nice ale, light and refreshing light taste not to fierce a golden brown in colour. With a fruity clean refreshing spicy after taste that adds to the enjoyment.

I'd agree with you there, Bob. There's nothing exceptional about First Gold, but it is a very nice beer. I prefer Golden Glory - not everyone likes the full flowery flavours, but it's clear a lot of love has gone into that one. First Gold seems almost watered down by comparison.

On to the Brakspear:
Weakest brew of the night at just 3.4%, and is only notable for its anonymity. It isn't bland by any means, but it's hard to pin down any aspect to recommend. Judging this by one pint is probably unfair; I'd imagine it's something that would get better as the evening wore on, but I only have one bottle to judge it by. A reasonable end to the evening
And with that, Bob, I'm off to bed.

(512) Pecan Porter
Whenever I pour a pint of this it looks just like Texas oil coming out of the tap. Completely opaque - you'd need a 5,000 watt arc lamp to get any kind of a glimmer through this one. Dark brown head that lasts and lasts. The nose shouts ROASTED at you. Plenty of coffee and chocolate in the taste with a little sweetness and plenty of bitter. Must admit that I've never been able to locate the pecans.
You have a pint of this you can still taste it an hour later. One of the heaviest-bodied beers I've ever had the pleasure to drink. Almost chewy. You could have this on toast for breakfast.

Now, that "(512) Pecan Porter
" sounds like my kinda drink which brewery is it?
I may have to try and hunt that down from my obscure beer mail order peoples; they have a bit on their web-site I've yet to test where they say 'we'll try our hardest to get the beer for you if its not already listed in our stock'

You're not going to get that brew unless you visit Austin. As far as I know they don't have any distribution outside the immediate area yet, not even around Texas, and I'm not sure they could brew enough anyway. (512) is just two blokes, Kevin and Nate. Nate used to work for the Drafthouse as it happens. When I spoke to Nate last time he delivered some beer to us he still wasn't sure if the porter is going to be a seasonal of if they're going to add it to the other three beers as part of the permanent range of beers.
The (512) pale is one of the best bitters I've ever tasted
