Getting the Discussion Going
Demon Drawer Started conversation May 16, 2000
OK it's gone a bit quiet so I'm going to get the conversation started.
Gone with the Wind was such a trauma when it came to casting. Like Interview with a Vampire and Bonfire of the Vanities which followed in the jump from most popular Book to film the importance of the right actors was an essential. Scarlett was scoured though every agents books and audition studio in America and Britain because every actress wanted the part, and the other parts were also as heaviely sought after. The casting was a sucess and both writer and readers apporved unlike the other two mentioned above. Anne Rice did not want Cruise to be in IWAV, and as for BOTV the Screenplay failed to do the book justice, although Bruce Willis did sterling work in what there was.

Now then, wasn't Olivier supposed to have been (secretly or otherwise) angling for the role of Rhett?
Leigh, of course, played a Southerner in A Streetcar Named Desire. Impressive.

Olivier was but they didn't want to cast a couple believing the sexual tension would never be right.

Olivier was never seriously on the cards for the role of Rhett as public opinion dictated Gable. Had he not taken the role, the film would have flopped. Also, the scandal surrounding the two atthe time was too much bad publicity for a film that was already suffering from financial worries.
The casting of Leigh caused uproar and boycotts in Atlanta where their own belles had been turned down for the role.
It's ironic to think that an English woman born in India has won two Best Actress Oscars for All-American southern belle Roles (Scarlett O'hara in GWTW and Blanche Dubois in a StreetCar Named Desire.

High Society as in the musical remake of the Philadelphia Story starring Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra and Grace Kelly?
Hi there- Demon Drawers has sent me from the film society to ask about reviewing Annie Hall for you. He reckoned it would be a good film for here, and since it's my favourite....
Anyway, I just wanted to know if it's possible, and if so, what do I do?

Ashley Posted Jun 24, 2000
That would be absolutely brilliant.
It's also quite freaky as I've put in an order for the Woody Allen Season at the NFT and Annie Hall is one of the films I'm going to.
When you have done the review, if you could post it to a new thread on this forum and I'll add it to the page (I've yet to sort it out - that will come soon - promise) and I'll put your name as a researcher/reviewer.
Cheers for now.

Excellent (but not in a Mr Burns way), and thanks.
NFT? Call me ignorant, but what that?

National Film Theatre it's on the South Bank of the Thames, near the National Theatre.

It's a London thing. London get's all the great movies, something now I'm back in the provinces I detest. Gattica for example only showed for one week anywhere in N. Ireland and it was one of those weeks I was having to play bowls all week so I wasn't very happy. I checked the paper that Saturday and not even the wee small cinemas, nor the 14 screen mutliplexes were running it.
For things like movies I *DO* miss London.

God, I love London. That's second choice, after New York (of future living places I mean). Covent Garden is probably my favourite place on Earth
Well, I used to have a problem getting to the cinema, but there are now quite a few decent cinemas within a bus journey of me so it's ok.
Gattaca? I *hated* that movie. It may have something to do with thinking Ethan Rayne and Uma Thurman have the combined charisma of a sock...

Ethan Hawke you mean.
Anyway, as a Sci-fi buff I wanted the chance to see it. But never got that chance until the video came out. Personally I think Ethan does have personality but in that film not having personality but being part of the system was what it was all about.

Mmmm, not convinced. I saw Great Expectations
*slams head off desk*
Sorry, Buffy fanatic, after Ethan, Rayne must now follow.
Well, like you said, sci-fi buff, so a must-see, but that's the pit fall- sometimes you end up with godawful films- I mean, did you see Generations? Made me want to vomit.
At least I've got the sense to avoid Battlefield Earth. Though I knew that was gonna be awful when I read about it last year

Generations was rubbish. Even my mother thought so when it came out on TV.

I was so psyched up for that. I mean- Kirk and Picard together, big wows.
But nope, I was reminded of that little problem with William Shatner. You know, the one where he can't act

LOL I didn't think the plot was worth it. I know that plot isn't the main thing in scifi, but really, what was the point of this one not being an episode or something? I was like, what?

Archangel Tweetie (01/06/02...) Posted Jun 29, 2000
True, I mean, First contact couldn't really have been an episode, and that was a brilliant film. Maybe that's the benchmark.
Although, I'm beginning to believe in this whole odd numbers curse- after years of rubbishing it
