I couldn't figure out Frontier... probably 'cos I pirated it with no manual smiley - winkeye
I played the original Elite on the BBC... it was absolutely awesome. I've played a PC version but it didn't seem to have witch space or the missions, so I couldn't get very far.
I made 'Elite' several times though smiley - smiley...and bought a Tribble...

Oh my hero... ~Greebo sighs with appreciation~... Me never made Elite... but me did try to become a miner forty-niner... hmmm... Frontier had a problem with that... me seems to recall... ~grin~

The best bits of Elite and Frontier were the cool descriptions of planets and their inhabitants... I had many a quiet ~snigger~ at those...

No... is it good? Who's it made by? Is it like Elite/Frontier? Is it new new, just released? Is it official? Is it common? Can I get it? Is it good? Does it have amusingly randomized descriptions of planets? Is it fun? Does it have Tribbles?

Well it's proper title is X-Beyond the Frontier... and it was brought out late last year by EGOSOFT... It is based on the Elite universe... sort of... ~grin~... it is not done by the original people... and the graphics are a lot better... but it is basically the same...

Look out for it at..

http://www.THQ.COM
or
http://EGOSOFT.COM

Me thinks there is a playable demo for downloading on line somewhere... but me can't remember where right now... those tow websites should help you out though...

It is NOT ELITE though... me don't think any game could be as good.. ~Greebo shakes her head sadly... pining for the good old days of Elitism...~

I now call WWW 'hex-U' because one W is a double U, so WWW is six Us, and so is hex-U.
Trouble is nobody else knows what I'm on about smiley - winkeye

I visited that Beyond the Frontier site, looks fun. I think I'll download the demo sometime. Probably on the weekend (cheap rate)!
Talking of ~grin~s, I've drawn a pic of you on Joanna's Donut Stall float, at http://www.h2g2.com/A291511 if I'm right. (and not if I'm wrong.) The float isn't finished yet but take a look smiley - smiley

Elite, I never did make it. smiley - sadface
Wire frame graphics, unless you had a pc which did shading.

I do remmeber a cheat in the spectrum version (well there were a few) that enabled you to hyperspace straight into the space station of the planet you were going to. It did save an awfull lot of messing about with cops and robbers smiley - winkeye.

Thanks be to the emulator writers who enable me to still play these games even now.

I've got a couple of PC versions, but for some reason neither have any missions or witch space. I don't suppose either of you have a bugless PC conversion/emulator that does?

I don't know about the pc versions. I've never been able to play the copies I have, it all just moves too fast on this machine (which ain't no speed freak either smiley - smiley)

As for emulators I had a spectrum, so I've got a few emulators for that. Then there's the thing of finding the game images (it's not hard) and depending on how well the emulator emulates, you have a virtual spectrum or whatever.

Doing a search on Yahoo* for whatever 8 bit computer you want and emulator should throw up a few links to the emulators themselves though http://www.gm.fh-koeln.de/~it048/welcome.html seems to have a few links that are worth checking out.

Oh yes I also meant to add (hit the post message button too early) that I've only used spectrum emulators in anger (jpp, zx80, xzx) and they are good.

and the foot note from *above: There are other search engines avaliable.

The PC version is so difficult to use... you know, EMS memory is just -so- passé...

I was thinking more in the I'm only running a 233MHz chip, but a game designed for a machine that went at less than a quater of that.
I'm not fast enough smiley - winkeye

Are you running Elite or Elite: Frontier? Frontier works OK on mine... Have a look on the web for a slow-down program.

I was trying to run plain old ordinary Elite that I'd found on the web somewhere.
I know I can run a version in an emulator but I wanted to see what would happen if I ran the original PC version on my machine.
I guess I could do something to slow it down but well I can't be bothered realy smiley - smiley
