Interesting article; very well written. I may well go bacjk to it at siome pouint and read it in detail.
BTW, what made you write it - it seems totally different to your other Guide entries.

Incidentally, I discovered this article by accident because the conversation pertainiong to it appeared in my 'intray' even though I hadn't subscribed to it. Do you (or anyone else) have this problem, out of interest?

Thanks.

Yes, it's totally different, but then I like to think they're all totally different. (Humour me, here. I said 'like' to think, right...?)

There was a certain amount of "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" in this. And I wanted to find out how much my writing is diminished if I really stay right inside the Guidelines.

IMHO, it's diminished quite a lot, but then I would say that, wouldn't I? It'll be interesting to see what others think. I'm even beginning to wonder if this Entry is really all that straight anyway. Some parts border on opinion, and the best of the links is to a poem of dubious relevance.

Why this subject? Because I work in steel, in Sheffield, and I'm interested in local history. I guess that's the reason it popped into my head anyway. I care about the subject, and I think I was motivated to describe it as well as I could.

I wish I could find a better photo of the statues on the web. This one is taken from the wrong side, just the teemer's backside with the mould-action all hidden. A surprising lapse in the work of its photographer, who's normally a flawless observer of this city.

I have heard talk of these phantom links, yes, but never experienced them (except for observing the possibly-related phenomenon of recurrent Entries in searches, apparently always the same ones, nothing to do with the subject. The 'Plymouth Prawn' is my favourite of these, btw. It would be smiley - cool if I've now got one of my own, though this isn't the one I'd choose)

i'm a bit slow this sunday morning (afternoon now!), but I've only just twigged what you meant by a 'straight blade'.

Also, it's just occurred to me that I might have subscribed to 'Random Entry'. If so, how might I find out, any ideas?

Apart from asking a Guru (shuddersmiley - winkeye), not really.
Someone once told me that subscribing to 'Random Entry' flagged up every new Entry posted - but I tried it and it's not true; not now, anyway.
If you unsubscribe from Random Entry (whether or not you were subscribed to it in the first place), then I think the problem should stop. If RE was the reason for it to begin with, that is.

Beautiful poem, isn't it? Even metallurgists can be romantic sometimes.
