God asks, "What's hope?"

You say your reaction to seeing the cruelty of reality so clearly was, "God, I hope not." A curious notion, since if you really believe there is a god then you must know how cruel and merciless he would have to be.

Sorry, I probably didn't mean that to sound the way you probably read it. I actually came here to express my appreciation for your entry and to say I know what you're talking about. My own reaction to insects lately has been equally distressing - and I've come up with a 'policy' or rather I've finally come to see the policy my nervous system and mind have developed based on experience.

It is this: if I see an insect drowning I will make some feeble attempt to save it; and if I see an insect batting its head against the mystery of a glass window I will open it and free it. But if an insect crawls or lands upon my person I will dispatch it with a murderously reflexive and primordial glee and grow flush with the knowledge that I may have saved myself from some terminal disease. And like 'The Highlander' I will glory in, and absorb, the live forces I have taken.

Since these ants seemed 'prepared' to die you may have done right to spare them prolonged terror and pain. Or if they are as smart as you propose, able to rouse you from your comfy chair, then perhaps they only wanted you to watch and learn how to face the inevitable which all living critters will face one day.

I honestly dunno. But it sure is refreshing to see someone able to discuss such things.
