OK! How're all your projects getting along, by the way? Since completing my first successful pair of socks I've become obsessed with them and am making socks for everyone I know.

Hi Reefgirl, could you explain "garter" stitch for me? I'm from Denmark and I'm not yet aquainted with all the handcraft terms in english.
I tried looking it up in a dictionary, but it didnt really make sense to me
thanks in advance

Garter stitch is something that is done in all Knit stitch, if that makes any sense

like ribbed knitting?
or the "opposite" if you can say that: plain knit on one side and purl on the other side?
...or...ah, you asctually wrote that, didn't you?: only plain knit, on both sides? Have I finally got it right??

by the way, does it have to be in a certain kind of yarn, or can I just use whatever leftover I have lying around? - as long as it fits the size of course

It's an ideal way of using up leftover wool, Double Knit is what I've been using

Unfortunatly Oxfam say crocheted Blankets are not strong enough, you see the people of the third worls use their blankets for a multitude of other purposes, carrying children, carrying possesions, shelter from the sun, so knitted blanets are better for that purpose
But there's nothing to stop them selling crochet blankets, pram and cot covers in their shops, the money all goes to the same cause, check with the local shop first tho

Danish Red Cross has groups of knitters/crocheters who makes blankets, but also childrens clothes, dolls etc. I know that right now they are sending the crafted things to two places: Zimbabwe where it is given to children who has been orphaned by AIDS, and White Russsia where it is given to poor, homeless, sick etc. people.
Maybe you have something like that too?

Yes...in danish...
I took a look on the UK Red Cross website, but couldn´t find anything about a knitting group...but try to contact red cross in your area, you can find some info on:
http://www.redcross.org.uk
And ask them.
In Denmark there are something like 40 groups of crafters for Red Cross. I know that there are other groups as well, like groups that knits blankets for Mother Teresa, or rather for those who took over from her... I haven´t got an address for them yet. If I find something in english I´ll post it
