You're too close to it, Big Al, you sure won't see where my problem lies.
>>Well, perhaps a comma could come aftr 'isolated', but I was always taught that in such a list a comma needn't be included before the 'and'
However, the comma after 'sources' should be DELETED.<<
In that case, change the word order and insert brackets:
derived mainly from vegetable (but also some from animal sources were known), had been isolated and their properties studied

>>'In 1845, Wöhler established the specific gravity (density) of aluminium prepared using a refinement of Oested's method; thus discovering one of its unique properties - lightness.
Again, something seems to be missing in this sentence. Not that I can see
However, I think the semi colon would be better as a comma.
After 'lightness', please could you add, Aluminium has about one-third the density of other common metals'.
<<
I think this should read: ...(density) of aluminim prepared 'through', 'by' or whichever preposition applies.

I think there should be a comma before 'prepared' in that case.

Oh, and as Giessen is mentioned so iften in all the entries I've read so far, it is written Gießen here. Not sure whether that needs changing, though (we once had a similar debate about Hanover/Hannover in another PR thread), but I thought I'd mention it anyway.

yES, I wondered about that as I was writing it.
GB, if you don't mind, could you change all the occurrences of 'Giessen' to Gießen.

Last one for now (I need a break, and I guess so does GB):

>>Ghent.<< Maybe say Ghent, Belgium. ?
Sorry, not much to say here, most of it went straight over my head.
I do hope all the hootoo chemists will get here at some point.

Just noticed this in 'Kekule:
'....and the form whirled mockingly before my eyes.. As if by a...'
Remove one of the full-stops after 'eyes'.
