Erm...in my very poor poor french that I havent done for three years...

Il est mis à pousser des cris

would mean
"He is set to push cries"

Which...doesnt make sense so I apologise.

se mettre a = begin

pousser des cris = scream or yell (idiomatic but perfectly current use of verb pousser)

so it's "he began to scream"

Mine does make some vague sense then

colors like turquoise are invariable.

one does not say "des chaussetes turquoises"; in fact, one does not say "des chaussetes turquoise". one says "des chaussetes couleur turquoise".

Thanks for your help! ...Though I’m a little confused right now… can’t I say “un chat noir” or “une chatte noire”? Do I have to say “un chat couleur noir” (a black cat)?
Colors are not always invariable, are they? “Marron” (brown) and “orange” are… but what about “rouge” (red), “bleu” (blue) etc. – they are variable, aren’t they?

this only applies to certain rarer colors which are derived from some specific object: couleur tourquoise, couleur café, etc.

personnaly I would use "turquoise" like any other colour just after the nouns like in "elle portait une ceinture turquoise" (she was wearing a turqoise belt)but it's true for "café" coz it's also mean coffee (the drink) , and coffee shop or pub , so people say "une robe couleur cafe" to avoid boggling (is it the right word) the different senses
to come back on animals , there are different nouns for pets and usual animals wether they are females, males or "babies" like in la chatte, le chat , le chaton (and even sometimes wether they are males that can have babies or not like in le coq et le poulet or le taureau et le boeuf)
but for other animals, the noun is either feminine or masculine and all the specie is sort of supposed to be so like unE baleine but un éléphant.
but many people (including me) don't know how to use plural with colours
