may 6, 1954, running for the Oxford team, roger broke the 'four-minute barrier' in the mile race with a time of 3:59.4 which was the first sun-four-mile race. now the 1500 meters is the accepted standard and the record has dropped to 3:43:13, sent in 1999 by morocco's hichamel guerrouj.
the 75-year-old bannister has been will participate in several ceremonies honoring the 50th anniversary of his achievement.
