i havnt read the info you posted yet, but will after this.
My favorite was FF TACTICS
but i verymuch liked the openness of number seven, i felt pretty free to come and go as i pleased, and to build gold and xp at lesure.
i think this is the way to go.

yeah, I completely agree. After Final Fantasy X, and even in XI, although they tried not to, the plot was to linear. VII was definitely the best, as there was so much freedom, and so many hidden sub-plots (such as finding out about Vincent's past).
