How many 'oldies' left?
Phil Posted Apr 29, 2004
Guess I'm certainly an oldie then if that's the criteria.
(Just one week before the big deluge it seems).

I still pop in on a regular basis, although my daily haunt is now DNA sister site Collective.
I've been a researcher since the first of May apparently, I found out about the site on Tomorrow's world.
I do miss the days of h2g2.com and all the excitement over the potential of the site, especially 'h2g2 on the Move'. That said the Guide is still expanding, but I feel its content - which in many cases is now of a very high standard - is being somewhat neglected by the BBC, especially in comparison to the technology.
Considering Book of the Future was made into a book, I'd still like to see a book version of h2g2. The pride I'd feel at having one of my entries in there, and the uniqueness of a book written by people from all over the world about all kinds of topics...
What a way to get everyone excited about the content again, eh?

Book of the Future was great (and I have to admit I felt pretty special making the final cut), but h2g2 is just too big for an idea like that to work. It'd have to be a *really* big book - even to just fit a fraction of edited entries in it. And with over-seas shipping costs, it would cost a fortune for many researchers to buy their own book. That said, I'd probably buy it anyway
But we'll just have to be content with making the front page. Tho it really sucks when you don't log on the day your entry makes it.
I'm glad there are so many 'senior' researchers left around though. Every once in awhile I start wondering what's happened to people I haven't seen online in awhile only to find they've not posted for 6 months or more .

Oh, obviously it wouldn't be practical to make the entire site into a book! That was the whole point of the Hitch Hiker's Guide in the first place - it was so big and complete that it had to be electronic.
But a 'best of' version contain a sample of the very best stuff h2g2 has to offer could be great too, not just for h2g2 Researchers but for anyone to read. Think of some of the strange things this site has covered in startling depth... and the strength of the Hitch Hiker's brand.

I think a book would be a great idea! The author of the Darwin Awards has been able to print 2 editions so far, so I think that there might well be a market for a condensed version of the internet site in paper form. Plus, the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is such a strong brand, many people would immediately be attracted to it. In addition, the quality of EG entries is pretty good - if you selected the top 200 entries you would have the makings of an interesting book for general readers. It would also be a great way of getting attracting more researchers to the guide.

Well, I know three that obviously should go in:
A1132138 Why Mosquitoes Must Die,
A1017695 Alan Smithee - Director ... of Sorts
A970904 Pentominoes - a Puzzle.
After that?... Eh, whatever.

I would have no problem letting a group within the BBC decide - whoever is putting the money together to launch the book should have editorial rights anyway.
Great article on Mosquitos CZ!

alas, I am rather new. July will see my 2nd anniversary here, which is a long time for me
The idea of a printed h2g2 is great! Too bad for people like me who don't have edited entries, just fiction and regulars in The Post...oh well!!
