You have failed to mention the further mental torment of the kernal re-compilation which proves that you can understand what linux REALLY is but the great danger is when it goes wrong it goes very very wrong. For all you know your monitor could just display a bowl of petunias but I have never heard of sperm whales.

I totally agree. Linux deserves a far longer article.

Drewpy, since you haven't yet written your user page introduction I thought I'd take the time to welcome you to h2g2 in this forum. I'm one of the Assistant community editors, who roam about looking for the lost, lonely and those who have just joined in order to say hello, and offer a helping hand and some advice should they need it. anytime you need anything just drop by my user page (by clicking the link made from my name above or going to www.h2g2.com/U55669) or the Aces Homepage and ask whatever you want.

Enjoy h2g2!

More importantly of course, enjoy Linux!!

We need some kind of alarm system.

But I should say something about Linux here. I'm going to get Slackware 7 soon. Yippee! It'll make a change from wrestling with Red Hat 6.
