how to know when i've been here too long
Loup Dargent Posted Dec 28, 2002
oh good... it's working...
manda and i have started a space a while ago for digibox users and people from LeisureDistrict [a TV interactive site]... manda was doing some work there when he replied to us earlier on...
tho' it's there to help LDers/digibox users to cope with/make the most of h2g2, people who are not under that category are welcome to come and have a chat... [hint... hint...]
the number is U201567 ...
we should have a few more activities in the beginning of the new year... there is a bar and a quotes' section in the pipeline...
we already have a regular written competition and a kind of survey regarding favourite TV series [which will be updated and improved soon]...
oh dear... more plugging...

that's a neat trick Mr manda, being in two places at once. i didn't think you could do that here.

a digibox is a set-top tv that we need to get cable TV... it also accesses TV interactive sites as well as some websites [tho' the latter is done in a back door way via an email with a link to these sites...]
we can order take aways as well through TV interactive...
manda and i are like the key holders of the LDers space so when some updating needs to be done or anything else we can go in with the password and do it... quite handy really and it avoids breaking the rules when editing etc...
quite a lot has been achieved since we started that space [end august 2002]... the launch of the plain skin is also partly due to the lDers space helping make the digibox users' needs a priority [the digibox doesn't have enough memory to access long conversations with the previous skins]... i say partly because we had some great support from non digibox users as well... twas a short but fruitful campaign...
and of course partly to the italics listening to us...italics...

manda1111 Posted Dec 28, 2002
no, what ever the digibox is putting on the TV, that is what it will record
but some of us have got two digiboxes ( and two TVs ) so that helps sometime
I am OK as I have got a PC as well

had to invest in another digibox for upstairs... the first one was supposed to be for the kids to watch the children channels... well one year later they can watch these programmes at last...
it's ok when the TV email works... sometimes it takes many attempts before accessing the link again... but yep, definitely better than nothing... and a good way of testing the water regarding the internet before investing into a computer...
our cable provider might go into TV internet soon... so we will be able to access more websites... again, as a taster it's a good idea... but unfortunately a digibox will not replace a proper computer [well not yet anyway] as it can't cut and paste, save infos etc... it's still a good extension of what the TV can be used for tho'... i'm still surprised of what can be done with the machine at times... even the TV emails can be done with coloured fonts etc now [as one of our members has demonstrated successfully in an entry that we will produce soon...]...
i'm sure there are still lots of things that can be done with it that we don't know yet about...
we can also watch TV at the same time... there is a small screen at the top corner... but when we want to change the channel we have to go offline and, we can't be sure of being able to come back straight away...
so it's usually left on one of the music channels or the sci-fi channel when i'm on h2g2...

I just noticed that I don't have any clean cutlery* and was reminded of this thread. I started it the day after I joined h2g2 at Christmas 2002.
A few things have changed since then: I have broadband so no longer have to disconnect from the internet to order in food. Plus, while NZ is still something of a backwater (and most of us still like it that way), we can now order food online.
Haven't seen Mr Manda for while, but Loup still pops up from time to time. The first person to reply to the thread was Gnomon Then Dr E Vibenstein suggested that if I hung around h2g2 enough everything else would seem less important
*can't really blame that on h2g2 this time

Yep, I do try to pop up time to time, but unfortunately other online activities have been taking me away from Hootoo a lot.
Still... I'm around and I'll try to visit more now.
I need to anyway as I want to add links to some of the Edited Entries on some of my blog's posts (it's the least I can do as, after all, it's thanks to h2g2 that I'm so active online).
I see that I'm still officially a Post Reporter. Cool! I might look into writing some stuff for it again.... I did enjoy doing that in the "old days".
Okay... On my way for now. Talk soon
