You might consider adding to the existing Edited entry via the Update procedure, though to be honest I don't think there's that much need to do so. In my opinion, your time would be better spent writing about something that isn't currently covered by the Edited Guide smiley - smiley

It seems a shame as this entry, IMHO, needs little (very little) work to be complementary to the present EG entry.

Gnomon - time to move on

It can only be a standalone entry if it addresses a different topic than the other entry, or covers an aspect of the other entry in greater detail.

Updates are tricky because the update is not sent to a subeditor, so the author has to get it up to sub-edited standard himself, and to be frank, Bob, you are not capable of this. You could write the update and then get a friendly sub-editor to volunteer to make a copy of it and put that through the Update process, but it would have to be done by informal arrangement between you and the sub-ed.

If you concentrated on some detail of the construction and made it clear that the full subject was covered in the other entry, you could probably make a go of this as a standalone entry, but you'd have to take out a lot of irrelevant stuff, such as the list of Roman Roads in England.

Looks like a good piece, im slightly surprised that there isnt an entry on this already, in which case its good to see a hole filled.

Check anything i ever say on spelling or grammer but doesent it have to be
"The terrain was an important factor on soft or boggy ground there could be no ditch as in stage 2"

Nosebagbear, there IS an entry on this already, which is why this discussion is going nowhere.

Damn, im normally intelligent enough to read the entire PR thread before jumping in and making a fool of myself.
I'd think that this would work better as an update but I cant speak for the problems of finding a subbie to help with it.

Bob, are you happy with making some adjustments in order to make this a stand alone, new Entry? Or would you rather try to find a Sub-Editor and make it an Update?

Yes what are the adjustments you suggest smiley - smiley

A1283122 already covers what you have written. Therefore you will have to choose to become specialist and write, in detail, about one building method only (like your Arches Entry smiley - smiley), which would mean your Entry no longer clashes with the existing Edited Entry.

Does that makes sense?

You have already written an Entry on Arches, so this information is now being duplicated here. You can link to it when you mention that roads go over bridges.

As Roman roads in general have already been covered here: A41607182, then only information that hasn't already been covered in the Guide is the road construction. In my opinion you need to cut out anything that isn't directly related to road building - link to the rest.

Now it's over to you - I know absolutely nothing about Roman Road construction! smiley - smiley

Is that a 'one I prepared earlier'? smiley - winkeye

I think that's the way to go forward here. It's an in-depth coverage of a subject not already covered in the EG (as far as I can tell, anyway).

Perhaps do a swap - remove this Entry and submit A66643211.

Rod

section: Roads on Wetter ground paras 2 & 3
Look like repetitions (with typos)

The final surface layer was of coarse small stones...(it would be a coarse course, of course)
I'd suggest:
'... was of small stones...' or
'... was, of course, small stones...' or
'... was a course of small stones...'

but do you need it there - perhaps refer back to Stage 4 above ?

Section Milestones:
... 1000 paces apart...
Would it be worth mentioning that 1000 Roman paces are estimated at 1620 yards?

Section Upkeep And Maintainance, para 3
The best Roman road to visit today is the found in Sutton Park in Birmingham...
-> ...is found... or is it 'The Found' ?

Section Stanegate Military Road
Perhaps add that this is now known locally as the Military Road ?

This is an interesting entry, well done.
