*ponders summer solstice... gets lost in thought... suddenly realizes an entire week has gone by*
Hmmm.. almost didn't make it in here until time for the next tour stop.
Here's an entirely useless bit of information on using long words in h2g2...
I sometimes was forgetting whether the trick for getting to the last page of posts was adding &latest=1 or ?latest=1 to the end of the address, and realized that the server was apparently very forgiving in terms of what you use. In fact, if you add:
supercalifragilisticexpialidociouslatest=1
it also works!

It would be much easier if there was a button, I get fed up of keep typing it in. I'm certainly not going to add extra long words if I don't have to. Maybe I should stop going to popular forums...

The button is coming. 'latest=1' is just a workaround until the update.

Another update? Back to the zen garden for me then! I bet they swap the Post/Preview buttons back again.

Yes, they will swap the post/preview buttons back... but not until they're sure you've gotten used to the new arrangement.
Actually, what I've been able to glean from various posts by Jim is that the next update will include:
-- a latest posts button by each thread in a forum
-- a link to your own last post in each thread on your home page forum listings, so you can continue where you left off (I really like that one)
-- possibly some user preferences options on how you view forums
As to when, no one can say at this point, but they already have a lot of the work done.

I think that's missing the point of a conversation lol!
it will be nice though, to find where you last posted, then you just read everything after that. Sounds perfect. When when when???

They can't/won't say when, Mina. I know that Jim has already been playing with tests with different configurations of the revised forum structure, and I think they're working on trying the finalize where the buttons will go and working on the code. One nice side point is that in the list of different threads on the left in a forum, it will be easier to differentiate the different threads cause there will be a button or two after each causing some spacing between them.
I don't have any inside information... this is all stuff that I've picked up in the feedback forum and elsewhere (but it's been said by the italics, so it does have official weight). I make no guarantees, here

Hey, I didn't even get in here yet!!
I celebrated summer solstice... Seems like a very distant memory now... We always have a bonfire in midsummernight's eve around here... And if you go a little west they have maypoles instead of bonfires...
*goes to read the rest of the backlog*

I now have official clarification on the upcoming changes to the forum structure. Jim Lynn posted this over at Feedback a couple of hours ago.

The features that are appearing in the next release (scheduled for next week) are:
1: All links to forum conversations will have an extra link to take you to the latest block of posts. So you have a choice what you read.
2: The 'Most Recent Forum Posts' list on your home page will have *3* links. One to the start of the thread (as before), one to the last posting you made (so you'll be able to read any specific replies), and one to take you to the latest block of posts.
3: In the left hand frame with the forum view we're adding 'Move to earliest' and 'Move to latest' buttons to the current conversation.
4: Also for the current conversation, we're adding a visual representation of the size of the conversation, which allows you to go to any page of posts with
one click.
5: Each of the 'Other conversations' below the current conversation will have a 'Show latest' link added, again giving you the choice of reading the whole conversation or just the newest block.
We think that these additions address all of the navigation issues that people are finding with the forums.
